More fun is provided by auditioning radio “artists,� including a cowpoke (Benny Rubin) with a Yiddish accent and a homely-mugged beauty expert (Polly Moran in unbecoming makeup) who’s darn lucky people aren’t yet watching TV!

Idiot’s Delight (DVD) $19.95 They first meet in Omaha. They meet again years later at the Swiss border…and at the edge of World War II. Clark Gable as smalltime hoofer Harry Van and Norma Shearer as his one-time honey Irene, now passing herself off as a Russian aristocrat and clinging to the arm of a munitions baron, strike sparks in this witty, cogent clash of love and war based on Robert E. Sherwood’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Idiot’s Delight, released in the same year as Gone with the Wind, shows Gable at his rakish, manly, movie-star best. The most memorable scene: Gable’s Puttin’ on the Ritz, a wise-guy song-and-dance routine that ends with the King leaping gracefully into the arms of a chorus line of peroxide cuties. Lucky girls!

Marie Dressler takes command in the war between men and women as widow Hattie Burns, who runs for mayor of a city corrupted by illegal gin and slick pols who “could bring tears to a glass eye.� The womenfolk back Hattie, the menfolk don’t and the ladies go on strike until their hapless hubbies reconsider. This reworking of Lysistrata, rich in both comedy and melodrama, shows the great star at the top of her form, supported by frequent co-star and perfect foil Polly Moran as her campaign manager. Her Highness and The Bellboy (DVD) $19.95 Every princess needs a Prince Charming. But lovely Princess Veronica didn’t expect hers to be bellhop Jimmy Dobson. Hedy Lamarr is the princess, Robert Walker is the bellhop and June Allyson is a bedridden former dancer who secretly loves Jimmy in this frothy fairy tale set in prewar Manhattan’s version of a palace: an elegant hotel complete with royal grounds (Central Park, of course). The fun begins when Jimmy mistakes Veronica for a new maid. She plays along, the two strike up a friendship and complications – romantic and political – ensue. The obvious screen chemistry between rising stars Walker and Allyson drew audiences again when they costarred later the same year in The Sailor Takes a Wife.

Beauty and The Boss (1933) (DVD) $19.95 Bank executive Josef von Ullrich should be paying attention to the figures in the company ledgers, not the figure of the pretty stenographer sitting alongside his desk. Confidential Agent (DVD) $19.95 In pre-World War II London, Spanish agent Denard struggles to close a high-level business deal that will strike a blow against fascists in his native country. But industrialists not yet alert to the threat of fascism reject him. A teenage ally caught up in his efforts is murdered. And the mission itself seems a failure. Yet neither the story nor Denard will stop there. Charles Boyer plays Denard and Lauren Bacall is a jaded industrial heiress who assists him in this intricate spy drama. For her second screen appearance, Bacall took a critical thumping, yet her presence smolders. The film itself still satisfies, thanks in no small measure to James Wong Howe’s atmospheric cinematography and the story craft of source novelist Graham Greene.

They Met In Bombay (DVD) $19.95 Gerald Meldrick (Clark Gable) and Anya Von Duren (Rosalind Russell) have a lot in common. They’re both jewel thieves. Mushing through storms, clambering up glassy cliffs, hacking to the surface from beneath an ice-capped lake, Hudson scrambles to stay alive and lethal. McLennon may have firepower. But in North Star territory, its Hudsons fighting savvy thats good as gold.

San Quentin (DVD) $18.95 Do the crime, do the time. But what happens during the long years spent behind the walls of San Quentin?
