Rock Band 3 pedal mods    by Billy Morris

Rock Band 3 is a part of a series of video games based on music; this music game is developed by Harmonix Music Systems in collaboration with MTV Games whereas distributed by Electronic Arts for the Nintendo DS, I-Phone, PlayStation 2 and 3, PSP, Wii and also for Xbox 360 Game Systems. The series was originally inspired by Harmonix’s previous efforts on the Guitar Hero series where up to four players take part and simulate the performance of popular rock music songs with the help of controllers similar to musical instruments. Players get varieties of options like lead guitars, bass guitars and even drums to play during the game, while they get scored on the basis of their ability.

The first game was released back in 2007 just after Harmonix got merged with MTV Games officially; later its sequel came in 2008. Harmonix has always offered a number of free rock band 3 downloadable contents in the form of additional downloadable songs regularly on a weekly basis through the game console’s network services. Till date, over 1000 songs as free rock band 3 contents are available for players either as a free download or along with the game CDs. Harmonix have also introduced standalone Track Packs with a selection of free rock band 3 downloadable contents and also a selection of band-specific songs especially for the game players. Even the company has also designed the famous Rock Band Network for allowing various bands and labels to publish their own songs as modified tracks and also sell them for players.

With two pedal systems in free rock band 3, players get more options for high speed and hence they experience something new than the last two sequels. Typically, a normal bass pedal is meant to strike a vertical surface. Players facing any problem with their pedals should mount the base of the Rock Band drum pedal vertically. They can even adjust the pedal to bring the beater forward so that it would hit the base of the Rock Band drum pedal lying downwards. Players can also unscrew the bolt on the chain, pull the beater to the front and replace the screw. This in turn pulls the drum pedal forward and readjusts the tension spring. If the player wants to bring the two pieces together, they can mount the base of the drum pedal to a strip of wood making sure that it’s not very thick for the real drum pedal to get attached.

If the player wants to bring the two pieces together, they can mount the base of the drum pedal to a strip of wood making sure that it’s not very thick for the real drum pedal to get attached. Again, players facing problems with pedals can also use the Pedal Metal Billet with Hinge which is readily available in the market. To have a wonderful gaming with their free rock band 3, players should try for all possible option to modify their pedals for a rocking game play experience.

 !Viva! Los Straitjackets

!Viva! Los Straitjackets

$17.98

The Shadows/Ventures of the ’90s arrive as a quarter in Mexican wrestling masks, burgundy turtlenecks, black jeans, black Converse and bedecked in silver sun pendants. Live los Straitjackets effect an inscrutable demeanor and rock from a stage uncluttered with monitors. Because they actually listen to each other, the drummer sits in their midst at the stage’s edge. The band is tight, fused and rocking. For me, there is no better guitar-based instrumental rock album of 1997. ~ Tom Schulte, Rovi

 '89 Live in Japan

’89 Live in Japan

$9.99

Sometime in 1992/1993 a revamped Quiet Riot featuring vocalist Kevin DuBrow with Bob Rondinelli on drums (around this time Rondinelli had also filled in on an Aerosmith gig one night when Joey Kramer wasn’t available — call him Mr. Fill-In) performed at a little-known club in Billerica, Massachusetts called Mr. Tipps. It is one of those suburban gigs we call “the last rung on the rock & roll ladder” and it’s a pity because Quiet Riot had more than just a clever name, and more than the cachet of being the professional birthplace of guitar wizard Randy Rhodes. To those who don’t know the story, DuBrow faced a mutiny by the band he founded and Pasha Records released an album in 1988 with two different members, titling the disc, interestingly enough, after the first Japanese release by the original group. This DVD, ’89 Live in Japan, comes from that strange lineup in between and features vocalist Paul Shortino of the group Rough Cutt as well as bassist Sean McNabb and an uncredited Jimmy Waldo — keyboard player from the groups New England and Alcatraz. Why Waldo is treated like a hired hand is one of those unique situations which seemed to develop after Flo & Eddie called Mountain’s organ player Steve Knight “the most useless man in rock & roll.” The statement was far from accurate, of course, but it was humorous and Mott the Hoople and Aerosmith would both push keyboardists to the side and pretty much off-stage after that infamous quip. Though the 1988 self-titled Quiet Riot album faced horrible reviews and little or no commercial acceptance, this DVD is actually quite enjoyable. As a live band, Q.R. had that long-hair-’80s-thing down pat. What replaces original vocalist DuBrow’s personality is a very slick and well-executed heavy metal show. “Stay With Me Tonight” might not be a rock & roll classic, but it comes off well live and along with the nine in-concert tracks there is a bonus of the video shot for “Stay With Me.” This is no mere clone band going t…

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead

$10.98

Labeled as “anti-musicians,” named after a prayer to Mayan corn gods, and cause for press releases describing it as “set upon by rednecks,” …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead vies for that piece of scarred, post-punk real estate somewhere between the Who and chucking a whirring blender full of bolts straight into a jet engine. With this self-titled debut, the band will probably horrify the realtors. From moments of diversionary electronic tweaks to ones of shambolic, guitar-thrashed screeches (and sometimes both), the album realizes the importance of not trying to be important. The sound of bashing out unconventional “we hate something that we’ll make sure to mumble” punk rock without parroting any one musical thing is what — if anything — ties these eight songs together. And for good reason. Few bands can sound like such a rightful mess. The band has been lumped in with fellow rock unapologists Queens of the Stone Age and At the Drive-In, but this self-titled debut album is a caustic, fidgety yelp that almost belies its out-and-out intelligence. One of the band’s news stories might have said it best: “The band defended themselves with their instruments, which are now destroyed.” ~ Dean Carlson, Rovi

 ...Tick...Tick...Tick

…Tick…Tick…Tick

$15.98

Songwriter Steve Wynn, the former Dream Syndicate frontman, has been on a tear since 1996 when he offered Melting in the Dark. Since then, his records have featured howling, wailing rock & roll and deep, dark acoustic reflections — all of them bearing his trademark noir-ish lyrics that offer the shadowy side of life, love, and violence. He’s employed a variety of musicians, and they’ve always sounded like hired guns. On …Tick…Tick…Tick he’s got himself a real band. They’re all younger than he is, and they have the hunger it takes to really execute Wynn’s unique songs. Start with drummer Linda Pitmon, who acts as co-producer (along with Wynn and Craig Schumacher) on these sides. Add to this the fact that the entire band (including Dave DeCastro on bass and guitarist Jason Victor) plots the arrangements. Wynn’s willful loss of total control has benefited him in spades. The set jumps out of the gate howling with “Wired,” where it sounds as if Wynn is singing through a megaphone. It’s followed by the creepy rocker “Cindy, It Was Always You,” co-written with ? ber hard-boiled crime fiction novelist George Pelecanos. On “Killing Me,” Wynn employs Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?” guitar riff and mutates it into something utterly unhinged. The shuffle gets moved into overdrive as Victor makes his guitar scream, roar, and squeal while Wynn holds down the rhythm and overdubs a distorted slide. It’s followed by a seemingly simple ballad entitled “The Deep End,” which rises in drama to the breaking point about two thirds of the way through. It’s full of a kind of emptiness and questioning about the experience of loss; it expresses fear at the ensuing emptiness and the apprehension of being in this space. DeCastro’s bass enters about a minute in, and propels the guitars as Pitmon accents every line as if it were the gospel truth — and for the singer, it is. The swirling beauty that rises in the middle of the track transforms the protagonist’s voice, as if by …

10,000 Days

Tool’s sophisticated art-metal approach (some regard them as prog-metal) is marked by unrelenting aggression and focused intensity. The band’s use of serpentine, syncopated rhythms, and tight staccato guitar riffs topped by singer Maynard James Keenan’s passionate-but-controlled vocal style separates Tool from the slash-and-burn overkill approach of so many of their heavy rock contemporaries. The band first came to public attention in the waning days of the grunge boom, but have long outlasted that transient era with their dark, brooding vision.

 1000 Hurts

1000 Hurts

$26.98

Don’t expect 1000 Hurts to open your ears to anything new. Shellac’s sound hasn’t developed much. Are they yanking chains by periodically releasing selections from one extremely fruitful session? Only the band and a few tape operators know. No other band sounds like them, which legitimizes this status quo. The jagged scrapes of Steve Albini’s guitar, the somewhat laggard bass from Bob Weston, and the awkward-yet-steady time keeping of Todd Trainer’s drums remain in top form. For what it’s worth, Albini’s guitar does seem to gain more grace as the years go on — just watch out for the ugly jazz fusion lick that ends “Canaveral.” Raw, no-frills production? Absence of overdubs? Goofy time signatures? They’re all a part of the cauldron. As with the band’s previous LPs, you get healthy doses of extended hypnotic doodling, rumbling mid-tempo tantrums, speedy jabs, and a joke or two. And as with any recording featuring the wordsmithery of Steve Albini, one fights the urge to transcribe the whole damn thing. Often humorous, occasionally unsettling, but always intelligent and thought-provoking, Albini’s lyrics are a bit nastier than the past couple records. “Prayer to God” is no plea for forgiveness or well-wishing; he asks his lord to kill an ex-girlfriend and her accomplice. “Canaveral” dreams of whisking an enemy to outer space, in hopes that he’ll become fertilizer. If you know the band’s sound, your mind was probably made up prior to reading this. You know what to expect, aside from it not being quite as fantastic as At Action Park, but certainly better than Terraform. True to Shellac form, the record is a sound purchase. Within the domain of atonal, anti-commercial rock & roll, very few are on their level. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

1000 Watt Confessions

$11.99

Full-on cranked-out rock & roll, in the Hellacopters/Supersuckers tradition, which would fit since frontman Rick Sims played axe for the Supersuckers’ album in 1995. The former point man of the Didjits leads another ragtag band to frantic rawk glory, playing tracks with so much swaggering and tongue-lagging that you can almost feel the spit flying in your face. With certain cues echoing from the New York Dolls (among others), ’70s glam metal appears here as well. This is better than the Strippers’ first album, but the guitar freak-outs never quite peak as high as they did on the last track of that album, although several come close. These boys sing of the rock & roll life, of drinkin’ and fast cars, of tussin’ and tumblin’ and getting caught for it. For a band with a song like “Who Can Save Me?” and a nun on the album cover, the Strippers don’t want savin’ that hard. Kick-ass organ solo on “Get Em Down,” too. ~ Jeremy Salmon, Rovi

The evolution from blues to rock accelerated with the Rolling Stones’ second American LP. They turned soul into guitar rock for the hits “It’s All Over Now” and “Time Is on My Side” (the latter of which was their first American Top Ten single). “2120 South Michigan Avenue” is a great instrumental blues-rock jam; “Around and Around” is one of their best Chuck Berry covers; and “If You Need Me” reflects an increasing contemporary soul influence. On the other hand, the group originals (except for the propulsive “Empty Heart”) are weak and derivative, indicating that the band still had a way to go before it could truly challenge the Beatles’ throne. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

A few months before the release of Buckcherry’s long-awaited sophomore album, the national press proclaimed that classic rock was back, as if rock — classic or otherwise — had ever gone away. Buckcherry most definitely had, though, for four long years, and the group that returned sported three different members than the one that had left. But their timing was impeccable, as evidenced by the success of “Crazy Bitch,” a taster for this set. The thundering “Bitch” has a decidedly Aerosmith feel, not surprising when you discover that band’s producer Marti Frederiksen co-wrote one of the numbers within 15, the lavish power ballad “Sorry.” “Carousel” also echoes with sounds of the past, and is hands down the best song Rod Stewart and the Faces never wrote but should have, with guitar solos that reverberate of Ron Wood and a gorgeous melody that grasps your heart and never lets go. And then there’s the tasty country-fried blues of…”Brooklyn”? Sure, why not? There are rednecks in the Big Apple, too, but who knew you could hear such mean slide guitar and great bluesy riffs in that borough? Moving forward in time, “Everything” boasts some ringing U2-ish guitar, but the song itself has a much more ’90s alterna-rock feel, one of several tracks that fall into the now well-missed genre. And at the far end of the spectrum comes the likes of “So Far” and “Broken Glass,” the former a storming hard rocker, the latter pushing toward hardcore, both perfectly bookending this stunning set. So no matter how you like your rock served up, Buckcherry dish it with delight, and you’ll be wolfing it down and demanding more. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, Rovi

The Velvet Underground were little more than a rumor when Lou Reed left the band in 1970, but by 1974, thanks to Reed’s success as a solo artist, the Velvets had become a bona fide cult item, and that year Mercury Records released a two-record set compiled from tapes from shows in Dallas and San Francisco entitled 1969: Velvet Underground Live. The album featured a generous 104 minutes of music, and when Mercury reissued it on CD in 1988, rather than edit the material or release a two-CD set, they put out the album as two separate discs. While this seemed like a rather curious move, the album’s sequence was such that it divided in half quite cleanly, and while any VU fan will want both volumes, they don’t work half bad as individual albums. 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 1 rocks a bit harder than its counterpart; it opens with a grooving version of “Waiting for the Man,” moves on to a rave-up take of “What Goes On” that features some of Lou Reed’s finest rhythm guitar work, and closes out with passionate renditions of “Rock and Roll” and “Beginning to See the Light.” And where there are a number of ballads on hand (most notably a lovely take of “Lisa Says” and versions of “Sweet Jane” and “New Age” considerably different from those on Loaded), they sound just as committed and compelling as the rockers. While the Doug Yule-era edition of the Velvet Underground often gets short shrift from aficionados, the performances on 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 1 prove this band still had plenty of fire, and was playing at the top of their game. The CD also adds a final bonus track, an unreleased version of “Heroin”; while the same song appears on Vol. 2, this recording is a different (and considerably more aggressive) performance. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

1983 is an impressive album of previously unavailable, professional live recordings (the sound is as good as a studio recording) of Von Zamla’s 1983 spring tour, which the band regards as among some of their most successful performances. This is the first time any Von Zamla works have been released in the U.S., and it’s an especially timely reissue given the increasing crossover between orchestral modern composition and rock (the Rachel’s and Godspeed You Black Emperor! being the most then-recent examples; Frank Zappa being an earlier and, for Von Zamla, a clearly influential one). Von Zamla’s instruments and compositions take them several steps further away from rock than, say, Soft Machine, yet they still manage to keep one foot in it through the treatment and mood of the pieces. In “Forgeetyde,” they crank out an industrial electronic counterrhythm while rock guitar and bassoon weave a melody through. Just when the dissonance starts to get heavy, a light, airy tune appears and waltzes through with a Danny Elfman sort of carnival flair. The band turns dark on “Doppler” and builds a large, dramatic overture, then follows it with “Akarondo,” a piece that opens with pygmy-influenced vocal rounds and handclaps. Fans of eclectic modern composition and dramatic prog bands along the King Crimson lines will certainly wish they had known of Von Zamla when the band was still around. ~ Joslyn Layne, Rovi

Originally released in 1973 by the Soft Machine bassist shortly after the band had lost eccentric drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt and had begun their evolution into a respectable (and somewhat predictable) jazz-rock ensemble, this was Hopper’s attempt at something more experimental. As he reports in his amusing CD notes, the record label CBS was all in favor of his solo excursion until he let them know what he had in mind, at which point they declined to pay even for studio time, so Hopper had to take out a bank loan to make the recording — which says a lot for Hopper’s belief in his artistic vision, and not much at all for the musical (as opposed to financial) vision of CBS. Hopper’s 1984 is inspired by George Orwell’s totalitarian fantasy of the same name, and the two longest tracks, “Miniluv” and “Miniplenty,” feature Hopper’s multitracked solo work on bass, percussion, mellophone, loops and electronics, with only John Marshall, the Soft Machine drummer, contributing additional percussion on the second piece. This music had an appropriately eerie, ominous quality, with heavy use of chattering tape loops, reverberating bass drones and woozy, sometimes harsh slide work on bass guitar strings. Terry Riley’s early cyclical trance music was a large influence on Hopper at the time of this recording, and there are also strong echoes of “Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band,” for example, in the intertwined, looped sax lines in “Minitrue.” However, several of the shorter selections on this CD, with the addition of various saxophones, trombones and other horns, are inexplicably tied to a rather twisted and ponderous R&B groove. Hopper suggests, retrospectively, that these several pieces may have represented the “normal” citizens in Orwell’s dystopia, who were nonetheless a little “bent” by their soul-destroying environment. However, it is just as likely that Hopper was simply indulging his admitted fondness for James Brown. 1984 was always a musical oddity, and…

At the time of its release, much of the fuss surrounding 1984 involved Van Halen’s adoption of synthesizers on this, their sixth album — a hoopla that was a bit of a red herring since the band had been layering in synths since their third album, Women and Children First. Those synths were either buried beneath guitars or used as texture, even on instrumentals where they were the main instrument, but here they were pushed to the forefront on “Jump,” the album’s first single and one of the chief reasons this became a blockbuster, crossing over to pop audiences Van Halen had flirted with before but had never quite won over. Of course, the mere addition of a synth wasn’t enough to rope in fair-weather fans — they needed pop hooks and pop songs, which 1984 had, most gloriously on the exuberant, timeless “Jump.” There, the synths played a circular riff that wouldn’t have sounded as overpowering on guitar, but the band didn’t dispense with their signature monolithic, pulsating rock. Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony grounded the song, keeping it from floating to pop, and David Lee Roth simply exploded with boundless energy, making this seem rock & roll no matter how close it got to pop. And “Jump” was about as close as 1984 got to pop, as the other seven songs — with the exception of “I’ll Wait,” which rides along on a synth riff as chilly as “Jump” is warm — are heavy rock, capturing the same fiery band that’s been performing with a brutal intensity since Women and Children First. But where those albums placed an emphasis on the band’s attack, this places an emphasis on the songs, and they’re uniformly terrific, the best set of original tunes Van Halen ever had. Surely, the anthems “Panama” and “Hot for Teacher” grab center stage — how could they not, when the former is the band’s signature sound elevated to performance art, with the latter being as lean and giddy, their one anthem that could be credibly covered by garage rockers? — but “Top Jimmy…

This is a 2002 reissue of the original CD by guitar hero David “Fuze” Fiuczynski’s Screaming Headless Torsos quintet. Along with two previously unissued tracks (Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” and George Harrison’s “Something), this outing provides an early glimpse of one of the most powerful jazz-rock units to emerge in quite some time. On the other hand, perhaps the brand of music heard here could be akin to shock therapy treatment. Vocalist Dean Bowman adds a lot of character to this quintet as he raps, croons, and scats atop an assortment of high-octane pieces, consisting of funk motifs, jazzy progressions, and tricky time signatures. Dynamics abound, partly due to the rhythm section’s razor-sharp precision and seemingly impossible technical gymnastics. Fiuczynski leads the charge via his often slithery attack, marked by screeching crescendos, blazing single-note leads, and swiftly executed chord voicings. However, the group lowers the generally excitable proceedings down a notch or two during their soul-blues rendition of “Little Wing.” The band’s slightly in-your-face demeanor provides the knockout punch, yet it’s not all about aimless or frenzied chops fests. On this release, the musicians rise to the occasion amid 14 solid tracks that cover quite a bit of terrain. Recommended. ~ Glenn Astarita, Rovi

 2011: A Space Odyssey

2011: A Space Odyssey

$15.98

The Cambodian Space Project is neither entirely Cambodian (its members also hail from Australia and France) nor is its sound particularly spacy (on the contrary, it’s a sort of charmingly trashy retro-rock that borders at times on straight-up garage punk). But the group’s sound is dominated, very much for the better, by the vocals of Srey Thy, and since her melodies are frequently embellished in a melismatic Southeast Asian fashion and her lyrics are all sung in Cambodian, this debut album ends up sounding like a sonic explosion of cultures and time periods. Thy’s voice is a revelation: simultaneously childlike and powerful, it sounds like that of a beautiful bird with tattoos and a Mohawk. The band itself is doing some interesting things, but isn’t doing them very consistently: “Snaeha Doc Toek Kmom” is pleasantly ragged, and Thy’s vocals are brilliant, and the shared solo between a clarinet and a fuzzbox guitar is great. And “Chom 10 Kae Theav” is plenty of sharp, punky fun. But the 1960s surf-blues of “Rom Chong Vat a Go Go” just feels recycled, and the trou ou solo on “Kolos Srey Chaom” is way too short, pointing up what may be the fundamental problem with this band’s sound: it layers Western elements on top of Eastern ones, but never quite integrates them. Putting Thy’s marvelous voice up front was the right move. Creating a more seamless blend of sounds behind her might take them to the next level. In the meantime, there’s plenty of weird, surrealist fun to be had on their debut album. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi

20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of Tesla

$9.99

Tesla was a great hard rock band living in a time of pop-metal giants. Though they had some big hits, highlighted by an unplugged cover of “Signs” and the terrific epic “Love Song,” they never were as flashy as, say, Poison, so they didn’t reach the charts as often. Also, they weren’t as recognizably “serious” as Metallica or Queensryche, so they didn’t get written about in magazines outside of guitar publications, who were always thirsty for hard rock guitarists of any fashion. But they were an excellent hard rock band, with real passion and power, and a great set of tunes. Their volume of 20th Century Masters may not hit all of their peaks, but it hits enough of them to make it worthwhile for most casual fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Runaways

20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Runaways

$9.99

In the grand tradition of the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, the MC5, and the New York Dolls, the Runaways were a band who paid a steep price for being ahead of the curve. Their straight-ahead glam-flavored hard rock wasn’t as musically innovative as the above-mentioned bands, but as five teenage girls singing about sex, drugs, and rock & roll, they were hardy pioneers who dared to confront the ultimate crotch rock taboo (that women lacked the attitude to play hard and heavy), and the fact they were learning as they went along had a liberating side effect — like the punks they helped influence, they kept their songs simple, hooky, and heavy on the riffs, and all these years later their music is a lot more satisfying and fun than the bloated ’70s rock that was dominating the charts as the gals struggled along the margins. While the Runaways’ albums were often spotty, 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Runaways is all killer and no filler from beginning to end, and while a few classics didn’t make the cut (including “Hollywood,” “Dead End Justice,” and “Johnny Guitar,” to name a few), to listen to this disc is to hear a kick-ass rock & roll band strutting their stuff with top-notch cuts from their first three studio albums and the epochal Live in Japan. It would be years after the Runaways broke up that Joan Jett and Lita Ford finally got a taste of the success and respect their first band deserved, but this compilation proves they had the songs, the swagger, and the crunch that makes for great hard rock from the jump, and it’s as good as place as any to get to one of the great lost bands of the 1970s. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Some of the stodgier individuals in the jazz world labor under the delusion that a big-band project is not legitimate unless it sounds like something Buddy Rich would have done in the ’50s and is full of overdone warhorse standards that have been recorded by literally hundreds, if not thousands, of different artists over the years. But thankfully, not everyone in jazz sees things that way. 21 Spices, in fact, takes big-band music into both the jazz-rock fusion realm and the world jazz realm. This 2011 release is a collaboration between Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu (who composed all of the material), drummer Simon Phillips, and Germany’s NDR Big Band; also on board are Michel Alibo on electric bass and Roland Cabezas on electric guitar. And with this lineup in place, the result is a fusion album that has a strong world music influence and sounds a bit Weather Report-ish in spots, only with the muscular horn section that the NDR Big Band brings to the table. Naturally, Gurtu’s mastery of Indian percussion and the wordless, Indian-style scat vocals that the Mumbai native provides gives 21 Spices (which contains both live and studio performances) some Indian appeal at times, but Indian music is hardly the only world music influence that asserts itself on this 55-minute CD. Actually, Latin music is a more prominent influence, especially on “Broken Rhythms” and “1-2 Beaucoup.” Meanwhile, “Balato” and “Jhulelal” both incorporate elements of African music. So in terms of world music influences, 21 Spices is pleasingly far-reaching. And it is also an exciting demonstration of the fact that regardless of what bop snobs have to say, big-band recordings don’t have to recycle old Buddy Rich charts in order to have validity. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

Toto’s career has been a rather strange one. Several top-flight Los Angeles session musicians — many of whom performed on Boz Scaggs’ classic 1976 album Silk Degrees — formed Toto and achieved instant success with their 1978 self-titled debut album. Commercial success was fairly consistent, but many critics never liked Toto and the band’s pariah status was forever sealed when 1982′s Toto IV won the Grammy award for Album of the Year. Toto found their selling power in the U. S. fade in the ’90s while their star status in Europe and Asia shot upward; their mainstream U.S. pop/rock style probably sounded exotic to overseas audiences. Despite several personnel changes, the band never gave up. They celebrated their 25th anniversary with a concert at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on February 17, 2003. This show was filmed for the enjoyable DVD 25th Anniversary: Live in Amsterdam (a CD version is also available). Vocalist/guitarist Steve Lukather, vocalist/keyboardist David Paich, vocalist Bobby Kimball, bass guitarist Mike Porcaro, and drummer Simon Phillips (along with supplemental guitarist/background vocalist Tony Spinner and keyboardist/background vocalist John Jessel) were on tour promoting 2002′s covers album Through the Looking Glass when they made this recording, and the DVD finds Toto performing giant hits such as “Africa,” “I Won’t Hold You Back,” “Rosanna,” and “Hold the Line” along with plenty of intriguing album tracks. “Girl Goodbye,” “Goodbye Elenore,” “Child’s Anthem,” and “I’ll Supply the Love” open the show in the form of a lengthy medley. “Gift with a Golden Gun” is one of the in-concert rarities. Through the Looking Glass is represented by the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” Steely Dan’s “Bodhisattva,” and the Temptations’ “I Can’t Get Next to You.” (It’s interesting to note that while many Toto members had performed on Steely Dan recordings, “Bodhisattva” and its parent Countdown to Ecstasy …

Dave Mason is a co-founder of the legendary rock band Traffic. He’s played on some of the greatest rock albums in history: Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland, George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, and Delaney & Bonnie’s Motel Shot among them. 26 Letters 12 Notes (issued on his own Out of the Box imprint through RED Distribution) is his first new album in a decade. Originally produced by Mason at home in California, additional recording was done in Detroit and Miami. It’s a back to basics, ’70s style rock and Brit soul record. It contains some modern co-production by a number of folks including the Motor City’s Mark and Brian Pastoria (some of the mixing was also done in Detroit). It reveals Mason not only as a solid, focused, and relevant songwriter in the rock idiom, but as an expressive vocalist of uncanny power and depth (he’s actually gotten better over the decades). His guitar playing has continued to develop and grow: he is a far more interesting player than his peer Eric Clapton is at this stage of the game. There isn’t anything showy or hyper-consciously “dazzling” in the presentation, Mason’s always been humble, and he sets his playing and singing to be true to his songs. There are some stellar guests on the set, including Willie Nelson (playing guitar, not singing), and percussionist and vocalist Sheila E. The big surprise is soul/gospel vocalist Beth Griffith belting it out with great firepower. The production is warm, lively, and immediate. It’s not in your face; instead it concentrates on presenting the music as alive dynamically, though it is rich and deep in its textures. The opener, “Good 2 U,” is classic Mason, with a bluesy guitar riff backed by a taut string arrangement. The blues ring out in fills against Mason’s open, emotional baritone. The guitar winds around a funky backbeat on the refrain, complete with a chorus of backing vocalists, a tight snare, and a slithering B-3. “One Day” opens with the same raucous Stratocaster playing a gos…

When they were in Thee Shams, Andy Gabbard and Zach Gabbard played music that was firmly rooted in the sounds of the mid-’60s, but with their third album, their band Buffalo Killers has moved bravely into the early ’70s, and they sound right at home there. Buffalo Killers 3 suggests a meeting of the minds between Crazy Horse and the James Gang during a few mellow days in Laurel Canyon, and if you didn’t read the credits or look at the copyright date, many listeners would never guess this music was recorded in the 21st century. While there isn’t much here that suggests a shameless rip-off of any artist in particular, 3 conjures up a sense of time and place with ease, and the loose, sun-burnt vibe of this music, fused with Andy’s fluid but forceful guitar work, Zach’s simple but effective basslines, and Joey Sebaali’s colorful percussion work drifts between country-rock and hard rock in a way that suggests the strengths of both without hitching itself to either. Lyrically, the Killers don’t have a whole lot to say, but the melodies are fine stuff and the band plays with a seasoned air of musical intuition, knowing where to fill the spaces and how to make the most of their power trio format. Joining the Killers on their journey through the past are Kelley Deal, Brian Olive, and James Leg, but even if this is a very Ohio-centric cast of characters, this music has a rich West Coast feel, and in this case, that’s a good thing. Buffalo Killers 3 finds this band easing into an comfortable but deep groove, and not many bands have mined a late hippie-era approach with more satisfying results. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Album number four for this popular electric jazz quartet heralded a significant change in personnel; Lee Ritenour exited to run his new record label and Larry Carlton stepped in to fill the guitar slot. On paper, this switch would seem to signal a tougher, funkier edge for this band — and Carlton’s playing on the album is somewhat more rhythmic and upfront than that of his predecessor. But in practice, little has changed for Fourplay; their forte remains smooth-running, polished mood jazz with a gentle rock beat, soft-textured vocals, and good-natured interplay. Indeed, Carlton emphasizes the idea of continuity by adopting Ritenour’s velvety octaves and generally taking a restrained approach. Such a concept, though, generally stands or falls on the quality of the material — and the compositions of Bob James, Nathan East, Harvey Mason, and Carlton are mostly wanting in memorability, although the CD picks up speed near the end with James’ funky “Vest Pocket” and Carlton’s catchy, looping “Swamp Jazz.” Also, sometime guest vocalist El DeBarge returns with a pro forma falsetto performance of another Marvin Gaye song, “Sexual Healing,” which neither transforms the tune nor erases memories of its composer. Though 4 was recorded well before Fourplay’s first live performances with Carlton in June 1998, their early gigs mostly confirmed the impression left by this low-key album; no one wants to rock this lucrative boat. ~ Richard S. Over the course of their first three late-’70s albums, Foreigner had firmly established themselves (along with Journey and Styx) as one of the top AOR bands of the era. But the band was still looking for that grand slam of a record that would push them to the very top of the heap. Released in 1981, 4 would be that album. In producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange — fresh off his massive success with AC/DC’s Back in Black — guitarist and all-around mastermind Mick Jones found both the catalyst to achieve this and his perfect musical soulmate. Lange’s legendary obsessive attention to detail and Jones’ highly disciplined guitar heroics (which he never allowed to get in the way of a great song) resulted in a collaboration of unprecedented, sparkling efficiency where not a single note is wasted. “Nightlife” is only the first in a series (“Woman in Black,” “Don’t Let Go,” the ’50s-tinged “Luanne”) of energetic, nearly flawless melodic rockers, and with “Juke Box Hero,” the band somehow managed to create both a mainstream hit single and a highly unique-sounding track, alternating heavy metal guitar riffing, chorused vocals, and one of the ultimate “wanna be a rock star” lyrics. As for the mandatory power ballad, the band also reached unparalleled heights with “Waiting for a Girl Like You.” One of the decade’s most successful cross-genre tearjerkers, it has since become a staple of soft rock radio and completely eclipsed the album’s other very lovely ballad, “Girl on the Moon,” in the process. And last but not least, the surprisingly funky “Urgent” proved to be one of the band’s most memorable and uncharacteristic smash hits, thanks to Junior Walker’s signature saxophone solo. Through it all, vocalist Lou Gramm does his part, delivering a dazzling performance that confirmed his status as one of the finest voices of his generation. Three years later, Foreigner would achieve even greater success on a pop level with the uneven Agent Provocateur, but by then …

While the Blasters called it quits in 1986 after Hard Line failed to break through to the mass audience, it was only a few years later that lead singer Phil Alvin brought the band back, though without the participation of his kid brother, Dave Alvin, who played guitar with the Blasters and wrote their most memorable songs. For years, Phil Alvin promised to take the Blasters back to the studio, and in 2004 a new Blasters album finally appeared, 4-11-44. One spin confirms that this edition of the band can play up a storm, and that Phil’s passionate roadhouse vocals are as exciting as they’ve ever been; Keith Wyatt is, if anything, a stronger picker than Dave Alvin, the rhythm section cooks with gas, and the results will get the party started with soul fire and real rock drive. But if you’re a fan of the Blasters, it’s hard to not feel as if something is missing on 4-11-44. When the Blasters started out, they were practically the only game in town for this sort of charged-up blues and retro-rock wailing; these days, there are a number of worthwhile bands flying the flag for this sort of music, and while the Blasters are still better than most of them, the guys on 4-11-44 don’t sound as special as the band that cut American Music or The Blasters. There was an almost ministerial fervor to the group’s original recordings, as if they needed to wake up an audience to a musical tradition that was on the verge of dying out; 4-11-44, on the other hand, sounds like a great roadhouse band rocking on out, but there isn’t nearly as much force behind it. It doesn’t help that the set list isn’t nearly as interesting as the Blasters’ previous albums; while there are two new Phil Alvin originals, including the great title song, the truth is he can’t write with the same impact as his brother, and while the covers are all great songs, they don’t have the same resonance as the classic obscurities the old band made its bread and butter. 4-11-44 is a good album, and it does nothing to t…

50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD Hollow Body Electric Guitar (Antique Faded Cherry)

Back in the late 1950s, Gibson was boldly pushing the envelope on electric guitar design. The effort resulted in several models that were just too far ahead of their time to sink in with players of the daythe Flying V and Explorer being cases in point and were gone from the catalogue by 1960. The ES-335 however was an instant classic, embraced by blues, rock, country and jazz players the world over. By 1960, this model was hitting its stride though it was certainly a year of transition for the iconic model. In the beginning of 1960, the ES-335TDs were built to the same specs as the 1959 versions and were offered in only Natural and Sunburst finishes. By about midyear, neck specs began to change to a thinner and more elliptical feel and ultimately, production of the Natural ES-335TD would cease and the Cherry finish would take its place in the latter part of the year. It is this later version that many argue the 1960 ES-335TDs features had settled into their optimum form. th a fast new neck profile, striking new insert or reflector tone and volume knobs, the ES-335TD still retained early-spec details such as the dot fingerboard inlays, a double cutaway profile, full-length maple centerblock, and nickel-plated hardware that players have long seen as indicative of the models zenith. All these and more are brought back to life in the Custom Shop 50th Anniversary 1960 ES-335TD, a reincarnation of one of the most legendary semi-hollow electric guitar of all time, handcrafted by Gibson Customs Memphis division to celebrate the models golden anniversary. For this celebration, Gibson Custom is offering the later 1960 fast neck profile version, the most unique of the year and all aged in Gibsons acclaimed VOS (Vintage Original Specs) process, and loaded with period-correct hardware including insert volume and tone knobs, double band tuners and a pair of accurate PAF-style 57 Classic humbucking pickups. Most North American fans were introduced to the ladies of Shonen Knife via the cryptically titled 712 (1991). They even toured the effort, opening up for a then-unknown Nirvana. Actually, the numeric insignia was derived by taking a contraction of seven (nana), one (ichi), and two (futatu) to create the “na-i-fu,” the Japanese word for knife. The material immediately unleashes the band’s tongue-in-cheek sincerity and prankster attitude on “Shonen Knife,” which commences with the herald “Good morning, Shonen Knife freaks…” and dives into a repetitive four-on-the-floor sample of E.L.O.’s “Don’t Bring Me Down.” The following off-kilter Dadaist rap hails the arrival of this, their latest record, before reeling off a litany of their favorite musicians: “Nick Lowe, Costello, Beatles/Redd Kross, Ramones, Buzzcocks,” then proudly proclaiming “Shonen Knife is a cult band!” Couched within the Gen X anthem and garage fa? ade of “Lazybone” is the band’s understated penchant for catchy choruses and power pop melodies. They are perfectly matched to guest Atsushi Shibata’s forceful guitar solo. Among the other social observations are an extolling of weight loss on “Diet Run,” a surreal ballad to a breakfast cereal during “Fruit Loop Dreams,” as well as paeans to White Flag and Redd Kross. The latter were enthusiasts of the band, giving them positive feedback in the press. The cover of the Beatles’ “Rain” sticks pretty close to the original, with guest drummer Victor Indrizzo (drums) replicating Ringo Starr’s drum fills beat-for-beat. Even more striking is their take on John Lennon’s “The Luck of the Irish” featuring Redd Kross’s Jeff McDonald on lead vocals that nail Lennon’s weary inflections. 712 is a recommended starting point for those wishing to indulge themselves in some whimsical and thoroughly unpretentious rock & roll. [712 was reissued in 2004 with the addition of live versions of "Lazybone" and "Blue Oyster Cult".] ~ Lindsay Planer, Rovi

Joe Zawinul’s final edition of his Zawinul Syndicate band was a terrific ensemble that was perfect for any jazz festival. The multi-ethnic content, driving funky pulse, and Zawinul’s colorful keyboard foundation kept listeners on their toes and rapt with attention. Using percussion and guitar with no other solo instruments, Zawinul was fully able to carry the proceedings with support from very talented performers who always complemented the music, but never got in the way, or dared to. This live double-CD set perfectly exemplifies Zawinul’s personalized direction before he suddenly passed away, and exudes all of the energy the group produced in concert. For Weather Report fans, there are many direct or implied signposts that remind us why that band was so unique under the Austrian-born keyboardist’s direction. But at the core is Zawinul’s expanded sound, based in technological advances, conjuring up any number of folk based motifs from around the globe. “Orient Express” and “Madagascar” start the voyage in good form, reminiscent of Weather Report’s “Black Market” phase, as electric bass guitarist Linley Marthe channels Jaco Pastorius as Mediterranean music is contemporized with an American backbeat. Late period Miles Davis simplicity is employed during “Scarlet Woman,” perhaps a cousin of “Back Seat Betty” in its slow and mysterious but eventually composed strut. The mbira or thumb piano is played by Paco Serv alongside Zawinul’s vocoder and synths on the sparse “Zanza II,” and “Cafe Andalusia” concludes the first CD in a straight rock-funk beat with wordless vocals from the impressive Sabine Kabongo driving an unstoppable forward motion and kinetic energy. Seems like the band can’t wait to dive into “Fast City/Two Lines,” a speedy bullet train combo tune, fueled by the stinging Santana-like guitar of Alegre Correa, inspiring fine solos from Marthe and drummer Serv. -”Clario” is all Correa’s, a spotlight on Brazilian Jobim-styled sounds, induced…

$16.95

Although the band name 801 is associated with the short-lived side project organized by ex-Roxy Music members Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno that played only three concerts in 1976, one of which was recorded for the album 801 Live, Manzanera has used the moniker for other efforts, including naming it as his backup unit on his 1977 tour supporting his solo album Listen Now. That outfit (which Manzanera has immortalized with live albums recorded at Hull and Manchester in the U.K.) at least played some of the repertoire of the original 801. But this album, another live collection recorded in 1999, is entirely different. Don’t expect to hear “Baby’s on Fire” sung in Spanish just because it’s called 801 Latino. In fact, here Manzanera is joined by an entirely Spanish lineup, his guitar mixed in with Augusto Enriquez and Yamile’s vocals, Aldo Lopez Gavilan’s electric piano, Chucho Merch? n’s bass, and Carlos Valdez’s drums. The justification for using the 801 name seems to be simply that, once again, Manzanera organized a one-off band to do some concerts and no more. They play a set of entertaining Latin rock and pop (including Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Corcovado,” aka “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars”) with Manzanera simply fitting into the band. It’s an entirely appropriate effort for a musician who is the son of a Colombian mother and grew up largely in South and Central America before relocating to England, the land of his father. Listeners will enjoy it, as long as they know what they’re getting. The music here is much closer to the Buena Vista Social Club than to Roxy Music. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

801 provided Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera with one of his most intriguing side projects. Although the band only played three gigs in August and September 1976, this album captures a night when everything fell right into place musically. That should only be expected with names like Eno and Simon Phillips in the lineup. (Still, the lesser-known players — bassist Bill MacCormick, keyboardist Francis Monkman, and slide guitarist Lloyd Watson — are in exemplary form, too.) The repertoire is boldly diverse, opening with “Lagrima,” a crunchy solo guitar piece from Manzanera. Then the band undertakes a spacey but smoldering version of “Tomorrow Never Knows”; it’s definitely among the cleverest of Beatles covers. Then it’s on to crisp jazz-rock (“East of Asteroid”), atmospheric psych-pop (“Rongwrong”), and Eno’s tape manipulation showcase, “Sombre Reptiles.” And that’s only the first five songs. The rest of the gig is no less audacious, with no less than three Eno songs — including a frenetic “Baby’s on Fire,” “Third Uncle,” and “Miss Shapiro”‘s dense, syllable-packed verbal gymnastics. There’s another unlikely cover of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” while Manzanera turns in another typically gutsy instrumental performance on “Diamond Head.” This album marks probably one of the last times that Eno rocked out in such an unself-consciously fun fashion, but that’s not the only reason to buy it: 801 Live is a cohesive document of an unlikely crew who had fun and took chances. Listeners will never know what else they might have done if their schedules had been less crowded, but this album’s a good reminder. ~ Ralph Heibutzki, Rovi

Eat Sugar start their debut full-length with the post-punky ? Standing Still? before completely switching up their sound with ? The Revivalist,? a song that sounds like a great lost LCD Soundsystem outtake. From here on, the album sticks to electro-pop for the rest of the ride, with dancefloor-oriented material that rarely involves guitar, but vocalist Aidan Bogosian and the boys still manage to pack the energetic punch of a live band. The Faint make similar-sounding fuzzy synth-based rock, as do Enon, which is a natural comparison, since Enon’s John Schmersal produced ? Lev? ntense! He adds a slick fidelity to the band? s boiling performance, and combined, the vibe is excellent for shaking the floor of hipster clubs. Bassist Jim Reynolds and drummer Greg Poneris provide a tight, fast-paced, rhythmic backbeat and Mike McBride adds clever, tasteful synth lines, while Bogosian plays the party-starter, alternating between crooning and riling up his audience. If there? s a discrediting factor, it would be that, in 2011, the group is coming in late on a worn trend. Ultimately, however, dancing and rocking will always be popular, and even if Eat Sugar don? t have the quirky star power of, say, Franz Ferdinand, they are invariably an exciting, talented young band. ~ Jason Lymangrover, Rovi

? dmenn

$19.98

? dmenn were a short-lived Icelandic hard-prog band; they released only one album before disbanding. But it was quite an album — a double disc, now remastered and fit onto a single CD, it encapsulates both their abilities and its time period quite well. There’s a single, “It Takes Love,” which is the only song out of 15 sung in English (and good English at that); tasteful organ and jazzy drums shadow the vocalist for a midtempo three-and-a-half-minute journey that skirts the territory explored by the Doors and the early Moody Blues. The lyrics aren’t the only thing that make this song stand out from the rest of the album, though. ? dmenn were primarily a boogie band with some artistic pretensions, and the rest of these songs are almost proto-metal at times, with plenty of distorted guitar solos and hard riffing. “Betri Heimur” is built on a hypnotic, caveman-simple bassline that’s not far away from what the Swedish band November were doing at the same time. Some songs, like “? ? r Sviku,” have the feel of electrified folk music, with a particularly energetic drummer (his work is excellent throughout, and his drum solo on “Frelsi” is well deserved). “Frelsi,” the last song on the disc, occupied all of side four on the original vinyl; it’s a sprawling, nearly 19-minute epic of the type nearly every rock band attempted at the time, but it’s got more cohesion and artfulness than most managed. The Shadoks label has taken as its mission the urge to prove that great rock can come from anywhere. With ? dmenn, they’ve made their case once again. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi

 A Boy Named Goo

A Boy Named Goo

$9.99

Produced by Lou Giordano with his trademark full-bodied, immediately accessible, but never washed-out sound, A Boy Named Goo finally got the band across to a wide audience, and deservedly so. Right from the start, the Goo Goo Dolls sound perfectly on the right track after Superstar Car Wash’s OK but ultimately go-nowhere feeling — “Long Way Down” is another stone-cold classic of wounded romanticism wedded to catchy Cheap Trick-tinged punk-pop, Rzeznik’s singing the not-so-secret weapon. Hearing him on the descending chorus, matching the just sad enough guitar crunch, makes one realize that there’s always hope for full-bodied rock & roll. The eternal Replacements tag now makes less sense than ever — the Goos have their own enjoyable sound, Rzeznik’s a more individual singer than ever, and all three rock out accordingly. Takac similarly has his own sonic improvements, his formerly rasped high register now just a little more controlled but no less affecting, as winners like “Burnin’ Up” and “Somethin’ Bad” easily demonstrate. Rzeznik-sung highlights are equally everywhere — the commercial but never stupid “Naked,” with a great chorus and immediately radio-friendly music, the equally sharp “Only One,” and the mighty fine “Ain’t That Unusual.” There’s no question what the highlight is, though — however untypical of the rest of the album’s mid-range feedback fun, “Name,” with its sweet but sad acoustic arrangement, made perfect sense as the Goos’ long-delayed radio breakthrough. Rzeznik’s empathetic vocal, delivering one of his best lyrics on favored subjects of friendship, loss, and fame, matches unfolky strumming and quiet energy, creating a song that feels like both a farewell to the American Dream and to a long-lost partner. All this without sounding a Bruce Springsteen sermon — a rare thing indeed. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi

 A Can of Bees

A Can of Bees

$14.98

The Soft Boys, like so many other underground miscreants in the ’70s, spent their formative years (unbeknownst to them) generating enough critical capital to earn much sought-after biographical adjectives like ? influential? and ? underrated.? The Robyn Hitchcock-led, Cambridge, England-born, pseudo-psych rock outfit’s shared love for all things Byrds, Beatles, Dylan, and Syd Barrett was both venerated and blown to smithereens on their 1979 debut long-player, A Can of Bees. More angular and jarring than the band? s beloved 1980 follow-up, Underwater Moonlight, Hitchcock, Kimberly Rew, Morris Windsor, and Andy Metcalfe sounded positively possessed, channeling both ’60s progressive rock and late-’70s punk into an unholy guitar-driven onslaught fueled by Hitchcock’s surreal lyrics: opening a record with a line like ? feel like asking a tree for an autograph? is one thing, but backing up those words with an atonal, apocalyptic blues riff is another. It? s an often brutish affair that works more often than it should, with highlights arriving by way of the pounding and addictive ? Leppo and the Jooves,? the incendiary ? Do the Chisel,? and the impossibly dumb but nearly perfect pop gem ? Sandra? s Having Her Brain Out.? A Can of Bees has seen its fair share of iterations over the years, often boasting multiple bonus cuts and conflicting track listings (the impossibly prolific Hitchcock would eventually become notorious for this with his solo releases), but they? re all more or less complete, and the material continues to inspire, even if it? s only a handful of ears at a time. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

 A Gathering of Promises

A Gathering of Promises

$22.98

Recording for International Artists Records, the crazed Texas label that brought the world such acid-damaged visionaries as the 13th Floor Elevators, the Red Krayola, Lost & Found, and Electric Rubayyat, the Bubble Puppy seemed by comparison to be a beacon of semisanity — a rather typical psychedelic band of the period who seemed more interested in having a good time and cranking up the amps than in reimagining the size and shape of the inner cosmos. But that’s not to say they weren’t a good psychedelic band — the band’s best known tune, “Hot Smoke and Sassafras,” was a charging guitar-heavy rocker that deservedly became a hit single, and its flip side, “Loney,” was nearly as good. Truth to tell, those two songs are the most interesting tracks on the Bubble Puppy’s first album, A Gathering of Promises, but the rest of the material is certainly more than just filler — softer tunes such as “It’s Safe to Say” and the title cut show off the band’s surprisingly strong harmonies and folk-rock influences, while the interlocking guitars of Todd Potter and Rod Prince drive “Beginning,” “Hurry Sundown,” and the epic “I’ve Got to Reach You.” The Bubble Puppy could write and play like seasoned pros, and with the exception of “I’ve Got to Reach You” they had the sense to wrap up their tunes in three or four minutes, so that this album actually manages to end before it wears out its welcome. It’s not exactly a work of life-changing genius, but A Gathering of Promises is still a noticeably stronger and better crafted album than most bands of their time and place were turning out, and if it had enjoyed wider distribution (and another song or two as good as the single) who knows where they could have ended up. [The 2004 reissue tacks on monophonic single mixes of "Hot Smoke and Sassafras," "Lonely," "Hurry Sundown," and "Beginning," as well as four songs from non-LP singles; the mono mixes certainly boast a lot more punch than the often eccentric stereo v...

 A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973

A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973

$15.98

A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973 is an excellent best-of collection from the Poppy Family, a great, if largely forgotten, late-'60s Canadian soft rock/psychedelic group. The meticulous songwriting, production, and arranging skills of guitarist/mastermind Terry Jacks (who later had a huge solo hit with the classic pop single "Seasons in the Sun") lift these recordings above the work of many of the group's better-known contemporaries. Singer Susan Jacks has a beautiful voice that sometimes sounds like (but predates) Karen Carpenter, but is eminently more soulful. Although characterized in the liner notes as a "soft pop" band, the Poppy Family was also capable of a somewhat tougher sound that sometimes recalled Surrealistic Pillow-era Jefferson Airplane and folkier material in the Kenny Rogers & the First Edition/Roger McGuinn vein. Throughout, Jacks frames the songs with creative, if often dated, arrangements that compare favorably to his obvious influences, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Phil Spector. In addition to "Which Way You Goin' Billy," the group's biggest hit (number two in 1970) and a generous helping of singles and high-quality album tracks, the disc includes an alternate, wildly psychedelic mix of "There's No Blood in Bone" and two different versions of "That's Where I Went Wrong" (the second of which features some cool country guitar leads). Overall, A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973 is a fantastic find -- one of those hidden gems that record fanatics always hope to discover. ~ Pemberton Roach, Rovi

 A History: 1976-1980

A History: 1976-1980

$16.98

A delightful overabundance of jazz fusion alongside dashes of progressive rock is the best way to describe the exquisite music of Brand X, whose drums were struck by Phil Collins for their first three albums, but was soon replaced by Chris Burghi and then Mike Clarke towards the end of the seventies. Actually, only John Goodsall remained with the band during their short stint, which makes A History 1976- 1980 all the more attractive as a compilation. This quick turnover within the band's lineup gave each album a definitive style and structure, represented firmly within this collection's ten tracks. 1977's Moroccan Roll and Unorthodox Behaviour, their debut album, were Brand X's most solid work, and tracks like "Disco Suicide and "Born Ugly" prove it. The flurry of keyboards and aberrant guitar provided an enormous easel on which the band painted their unrestricted free-form of rock, including volatile bursts of harmony and instrumentation. "The Poke" from 1978's Masques is a fine example of this, while "Pool Room Blues" has the band gearing down just a wee bit. This compilation could have been bettered by at least six or seven more tracks, but A History does characterize the unregulated configuration of this talented band. Each of their albums should be heard on their own as well though, as they each embrace their own unique personality. ~ Mike DeGagne, Rovi

 A Musical History

A Musical History

$89.98

Given the countless Band compilations released over the years, plus the exhaustive bonus-track-laden reissues of the proper albums in 2000 and 2001, it's easy to be suspicious of the six-disc A Musical History, especially since it's the third Band box set released in the CD era. It would seem that all the worthwhile previously unreleased music has been excavated and that the Band's career has been anthologized in every possible way, but A Musical History proves that's not true. As its title implies, the set is a biography, tracing the group's career from their early days as the Hawks supporting Ronnie Hawkins, through their stint as Levon & the Hawks, through their time as Bob Dylan's backing band in 1966, through their emergence as the Band in 1968, then through their years of stardom in the early '70s, leading up to their departure at The Last Waltz in 1976. No previous compilation has done this -- they've either picked up the story with Music from Big Pink or offered up the greatest hits, and they've never weaved Ronnie Hawkins or Bob Dylan tracks into the story line -- and this thorough, all-encompassing approach does result in an absorbing narrative that does provide some revelations, most arriving on the spectacular, necessary first disc that traces the evolution of the band before they were the Band. Here, for the first time on a Band album, you get to hear the group's beginning as a rough rock & roll and blues combo, and while some of this material is a bit generic (albeit in the best possible sense, since they were a lean, tough, straight-ahead rock & roll group), this music echoes throughout the four CDs that follow, whether it's in the muscular R&B grooves of Levon Helm and Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson's tight, squealing guitar, or Richard Manual's piano chord clusters, or how the group touched on rockabilly, Motown, New Orleans R&B, country, and folk even on their earliest recordings. In this context, their teaming with Dylan not only seems like a nat...

A Place to Land [Bonus Tracks]

$18.98

Little Big Town scored big with its second album, 2005′s The Road to Here, thanks to the chart topping single “Gone.” Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Roads Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, and Phillip Sweet’s meld rootsy contemporary country with acoustic and electric instruments and vocal harmonies inspired by Fleetwood Mac proved irresistible. A Place to Land is superior to its predecessor in every way: production feels more organic, the music is more sophisticated, and the lyrics more poignant. Perhaps the real secret to the success of this quartet is its secret weapon in behind-the-boards fifth member Wayne Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick is the band’s producer and songwriting partner. He’s chief guitar picker, and plays just about anything with strings, as well as the clavinet and B-3. If the sound on The Road to Here is reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac’s glory years, A Place to Land drinks deeply from the well of the entire Southern California scene from the mid- to late ’70s. It’s not all regurgitation either. Little Big Town’s sound is rooted deeply in traditional, organic country music. Their songs meld seamlessly with the vocal harmonies that evoke vintage Crosby, Stills & Nash and the Eagles earliest records. While the album’s opener, “Fine Line,” literally rings with Lindsey Buckingham’s chord progressions, choruses, and arranged vocals (? la “Go Your Own Way”); it’s open rock & roll territory with one exception: the verse structure has enough hard country to rise above that influence. They distinguish themselves a bit more on the album’s road-weary first single, “I’m with the Band.” Its beautifully paced B-3, electric guitars, and big cracking drums, Dobro, banjos, and mandolin are woven into a beautiful road song. The Eagles get melody-checked in “That’s Where I’ll Be,” but the harmonies here could only be better if Bernie Leadon and Timothy B. Schmit joined in for six-part harmony. The acoustic guitars rise and fall, keeping a steady rhythmic chatter that serv…

After touring in support of their debut album, Parachutes, Coldplay was personally and professionally exhausted. Frontman Chris Martin insisted he was dry; by the time they closed their European tour in summer 2001, he hadn’t written a song in months. The U.K. music press immediately pounced on the idea of Coldplay calling it quits, but somewhere lurked the beauty of “In My Place.” The spirit and soul of this ballad allowed Coldplay to pull it together to make a second album. What came from such anguish and inquisition was A Rush of Blood to the Head. Coldplay has surely let it all go on this record. Acoustics are drowned out by Jon Buckland’s riveting guitar work, and vocally, Martin has sharpened his falsetto, refining his haunting delivery. It’s a strong album; you can feel, hear, and touch the blood, sweat, and tears behind each song, and that’s exactly what Coldplay was going for. Co-producer Ken Nelson and mixer Mark Pythain (the team behind the blissful beauty of Parachutes) allowed Coldplay to make an album that’s initially inaccessible, but that’s what makes it intriguing. Lush melodies and a heartbreak behind the songs are there, but also a newfound confidence. From the delicate, shimmery classic “In My Place” to the piano surge of “The Scientist,” Coldplay exudes an honest passion. The disco haze of “Daylight” and the love-drunk ballad “Green Eyes” are divine examples of solid lyrical arrangements, but “Politik” and the stunning guitar-driven “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face” project a nervy edge to the band. Echoes of early post-punk showcase Coldplay’s ballsy musicianship. Don’t fret — it’s not exactly rock & roll, but Radiohead, Echo & the Bunnymen, and the Smiths aren’t exactly rock & roll either, and they’re well loved. “Yellow” didn’t follow the rock formula, but it sold well, and similarly A Rush of Blood to the Head might not instantly grab listeners, but it’s not tailored that way. A Sense of Purpose

A Sense of Purpose

Frantic metal band In Flames can deliver a good melody around the militaristic, precision drumming of Daniel Svensson and the occasionally guttural yelps of frontman Anders Frid? n. Whether it’s a tight, polished effort like “The Mirror’s Truth” with traces of classic metal ? la Iron Maiden or especially Judas Priest, In Flames definitely bring a sense of purpose to this record. From there, the group increase the Metallica-ish franticness with “Disconnected” that relies on heavy guitar riffs but a far lighter, almost airy chorus and bridge. This is improved upon later on the album as “I’m the Highway” takes the record to another level. Probably the heaviest track is “Condemned,” that again is driven by Svensson and the guitar tandem of Jesper Str? mblad and Bj? rn Gelotte. These less intense moments are rarities, though, as “Sleepless Again” almost contains slight “emo” characteristics throughout. The group truly strike gold with the deliberate but delectable “Alias” that brings to mind classic Led Zeppelin in the various twists and turns it takes. Following a beefy, brawn-saturated “Move Through Me,” In Flames save the crowning achievement for the lengthy, winding “The Chosen Pessimist,” which opens like a reflective, introspective piece of music by Sigur R? s before finding its way effortlessly. In Flames continue to make their mark by being rooted in a strong metal or hard rock foundation but being musically and creatively inquisitive enough to seek out something more. ~ Jason MacNeil, Rovi

On their fourth album, the Sand Pebbles keep up the energetic tradition of psych rock with a passionate edge that seems to be endemic to Australia in the best possible way — though the soft chimes that introduce the album via the beginning of “The Day Summer Fell” may seem a bit of a contrast to that spirit. But with the slow fade-in of the rhythm section and the delicate guitar sting and easygoing singing that follow, it’s all accomplished business as usual, though the Sand Pebbles clearly have the kind of spirit that balances out studio experience with the get-together-and-jam inspiration that got them started to begin with. There’s a great tip of the hat to a forebear and, via their first label, Camera Obscura, musical compatriot with the concluding song — “Black Sun Ensemble,” named after the legendary Arizona cult band whose own spindly and blasted visions of psychedelic inspiration deserve the exultant performance honoring them here. Piet Collins’ fluid, rumbling drum work is the not so secret weapon throughout, his accomplished work lending just that extra kick song for song — his work on the overt Neu! tribute “A Thousand Flowers” is at once straightforward and possessing the right swing for the job as well. Yet the truer observation is that the quintet is perfectly balanced, everything sounding just right in comparison to everything else. Consider the balance between guitarists Ben Michael X, Andrew Tanner, and Tor Larsen on “Red, Orange, Purple and Blue,” with everything from fried soloing to rhythm chug to soft melodic filigree feeding off each other perfectly. It’s a beautiful moment on a constantly strong album. The American release featured three bonus tracks, including radio session takes of “Natalie” and “Short Term Memory Loss.” ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi
