Gettysburg $6.99 The Civil War is the American Iliad. Lincoln, Stonewall Jackson, Grant, and Lee still stand as heroic ideals, as stirring to our national memory as were the legendary Achilles and Hector to the world of the ancient Greeks. Within the story of our Iliad one battle stands forth above all others: Gettysburg. Millions visit Gettysburg each year to walk the fields and hills where Joshua Chamberlain made his legendary stand and Pickett went down to a defeat which doomed a nation, but in defeat forever became a symbol of the heroic Lost Cause. As the years passed, and the scars healed, the debate, rather than drifting away has intensified. It is the battle which has become the great "what if," of American history and the center of a dreamscape where Confederate banners finally do crown the heights above the town. The year is 1863, and General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia are poised to attack the North and claim the victory that would end the brutal conflict. But Lee’s Gettysburg campaign ended in failure, ultimately deciding the outcome of the war. Launching his men into a vast sweeping operation, of which the town of Gettysburg is but one small part of the plan, General Lee, acting as he did at Chancellorsville, Second Manassas, and Antietam, displays the audacity of old. He knows he has but one more good chance to gain ultimate victory, for after two years of war the relentless power of an industrialized north is wearing the South down. Lee’s lieutenants and the men in the ranks, embued with this renewed spirit of the offensive embark on the Gettysburg Campaign that many dream "should have been." The soldiers in the line, Yank and Reb, knew as well that this would be the great challenge, the decisive moment that would decided whether a nation would die, or be created, and both sides were ready, willing to lay down their lives for their Cause. An action-packed and painstakingly researched masterwork, Gettysburg stands as the first book in a series to tell the story of how history could have unfolded, how a victory for Lee would have changed the destiny of the nation forever. In the great tradition of T he Killer Angels and Jeff Shaara’s bestselling Civil War trilogy, this is a novel of true heroism and glory in America’s most trying hour. |

Hallowed Ground: A Walk At Gettysburg $13.19 [I]n a larger sense, we can not dedicate we can not consecrate we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our power to add or detract." President Abraham Lincoln James M. McPherson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom , and arguably the finest Civil War historian in the world, walks us through the site of the bloodiest and perhaps most consequential battle ever fought by Americans. The events that occurred at Gettysburg are etched into our collective memory, as they served to change the course of the Civil War and with it the course of history. More than any other place in the United States, Gettysburg is indeed hallowed ground. It’s no surprise that it is one of the nation’s most visited sites (nearly two million annual visitors), attracting tourists, military buffs, and students of American history. McPherson, who has led countless tours of Gettysburg over the years, makes stops at Seminary Ridge, the Peach Orchard, Cemetery Hill, and Little Round Top, among other key locations. He reflects on the meaning of the battle, describes the events of those terrible three days in July 1863, and places the struggle in the greater context of American and world history. Along the way, he intersperses stories of his own encounters with the place over several decades, as well as debunking several popular myths about the battle itself. What brought those 165,000 soldiers 75,000 Confederate, 90,000 Union to Gettysburg? Why did they lock themselves in such a death grip across these once bucolic fields until 11,000 of them were killed or mortally wounded, another 29,000 were wounded and survived, and about 10,000 were "missing" mostly captured? What was accomplished by all of this carnage? Join James M. McPherson on a walk across this hallowed ground as he be encompasses the depth of meaning and historical impact of a place that helped define the nation’s character. From the Hardcover edition. |

The Gettysburg Gospel: The Lincoln Speech That Nobody Knows $5.99 The words Abraham Lincoln spoke at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery at Gettysburg comprise perhaps the most famous speech in history. It has been quoted by popes, presidents, prime ministers, and revolutionaries around the world. From "Four score and seven years ago…" to "government of the people, by the people, for the people," Lincoln’s words echo in the American conscience. Many books have been written about the Gettysburg Address and yet, as Lincoln scholar Gabor Boritt shows, there is much that we don’t know about the speech. In The Gettysburg Gospel he reconstructs what really happened in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on November 19, 1863. Boritt tears away a century of myths, lies, and legends to give us a clear understanding of the greatest American’s greatest speech. In the aftermath of the bloodiest battle ever fought in North America, the little town of Gettysburg was engulfed in the worst man-made disaster in U.S. history: close to 21,000 wounded; very few doctors; heroic women coping in houses, barns, and churches turned into hospitals; dead horses and mules rotting in farmyards and fields; and at least 7,000 dead soldiers who had to be dug up, identified, and reburied. This was where Lincoln had to come to explain why the horror of war must continue. Planning America’s first national cemetery revitalized the traumatized people of Gettysburg, but the dedication ceremonies overwhelmed the town. Lincoln was not certain until the last moment whether he could come. But he knew the significance of the occasion and wrote his remarks with care — the first speech since his inauguration that he prepared before delivering it. A careful analysis of the Address and the public reaction to it form the center of this book. Boritt shows how Lincoln responded to the politics of the time and also clarifies which text he spoke from and how and when he wrote the various versions. Few people initially recognized the importance of the speech; it was frequently and, at times, hilariously misreported. But over the years the speech would grow into American scripture. It would acquire new and broader meanings. It would be better understood, but also misunderstood and misinterpreted to suit beliefs very different from Lincoln’s. The Gettysburg Gospel is based on years of scholarship as well as a deep understanding of Lincoln and of Gettysburg itself. It draws on vital documents essential to appreciating Lincoln’s great speech and its evolution into American gospel. This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, or American history. |

Sickles At Gettysburg The Controversial Civil War General Who Committed Murder Abandoned Little Round Top And Declared Himself The Hero Of Gettysburg $6.39 Sickles at Gettysburg: The Controversial Civil War General Who Committed Murder Abandoned Little Round Top and Declared Himself the Hero of Gettysburg by licensed battlefield guide James Hessler is the most deeply-researched full-length biography to appear on this remarkable American icon. And it is long overdue. No individual who fought at Gettysburg was more controversial both personally and professionally than Major General Daniel E. Sickles. By 1863 Sickles was notorious as a disgraced former Congressman who murdered his wife’s lover on the streets of Washington and used America’s first temporary insanity defense to escape justice. With his political career in ruins Sickles used his connections with President Lincoln to obtain a prominent command in the Army of the Potomac’s Third Corps despite having no military experience. At Gettysburg he openly disobeyed orders in one of the most controversial decisions in military history. No single action dictated the battlefield strategies of George Meade and Robert E. Lee more than Sickles’ unauthorized advance to the Peach Orchard and the mythic defense of Little Round Top might have occurred quite differently were it not for General Sickles. Fighting heroically Sickles lost his leg on the field and thereafter worked to remove General Meade from command of the army. Sickles spent the remainder of his checkered life declaring himself the true hero of Gettysburg. Although he nearly lost the battle Sickles was one of the earliest guardians of the battlefield when he returned to Congress created Gettysburg National Military Park and helped preserve the field for future generations. But Dan Sickles was never far from scandal. He was eventually removed from the New York Monument Commission and nearly went to jail for misappropriation of funds. Hessler’s book is a balanced and entertaining account of Sickles’ colorful life. Civil War enthusiasts who want to understand General Sickles’ scandalous life Gettysburg’s battlefield strategies the in-fighting within the Army of the Potomac and the development of today’s National Park will find Sickles at Gettysburg a must-read. |

The Battle of Gettysburg: The Eyewitness Account by Col. Frank A. Haskell $9.95 “Col. Haskell wrote the first and, according to many authorities, the best eyewitness account of the most pivotal event in American history. His unique position and duties required him to be in many sectors during the three-day battle.> Born in Tunbridge, Vermont, Haskell joined a law firm in Madison, Wisconsin after graduating from Dartmouth in 1854. In 1861 he enlisted in the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers. He was Aide-decamp to General John Gibbon, the Commander of Second Corps at Gettysburg. Within a few weeks after the battle, he wrote his brother in Portage, Wisconsin, this accurate and very moving account of what he had experienced. Col. Haskell was killed in action on June 3, 1864 at Cold Harbor, Virginia.> “Haskell’s long letter on the conflict lives as a classic narrative.” –Allan Nevins, The War for the Union” |

Receding Tide: Vicksburg And Gettysburg: The Campaigns That Changed The Civil War $10.79 Its a poignant irony in American history that on Independence Day, 1863, not one but two pivotal Civil War battles ended in Union victory, marked the high tide of Confederate military fortune, and ultimately doomed the Souths effort at secession. But on July 4, 1863, after six months of siege, Ulysses Grants Union army finally took Vicksburg and the Confederate west. On the very same day, Robert E. Lee was in Pennsylvania, parrying the threat to Vicksburg with a daring push north to Gettysburg. For two days the battle had raged; on the next, July 4, 1863, Picketts Charge was thrown back, a magnificently brave but fruitless assault, and the fate of the Confederacy was sealed, though nearly two more years of bitter fighting remained until the war came to an end. In Receding Tide, Edwin Cole Bearss draws from his popular Civil War battlefield tours to chronicle these two widely separated but simultaneous clashes and their dramatic conclusion. As the recognized expert on both Vicksburg and Gettysburg, Bearss tells the fascinating story of this single momentous day in our countrys history, offering his readers narratives, maps, illustrations, characteristic wit, dramatic new insights and unerringly intimate knowledge of terrain, tactics, and the colorful personalities of Americas citizen soldiers, Northern and Southern alike. |

In this powerfully narrated history Maine historian Tom Desjardin tells the story of the 20th Maine Regiment the soldiers who fought and won the battle of Little Round Top. This engaging work is the culmination of years of detailed research on the experiences of the soldiers in that regiment telling the complete story of the unit in the Gettysburg Campaign from June 21 through July 10 1863. Desjardin uses more than seventy first-hand accounts to tell the story of this campaign in critical detail. Following the regiment through the campaign enables readers to understand fully the soldiers' feelings towards the enemy towards citizens of both North and South and towards the commanders of the two armies. In addition this book traces the development of the legend of Gettysburg as veterans of the fight struggle to remember grasp and memorialize their part in the largest battle ever fought on the continent.
