Cowboy Guitars $23.48 Back in the good old days, all of America was infatuated with the singing cowboys of movies and radio. This huge interest led to the production of "cowboy guitars." These were guitars manufactured with western scenes painted right on the guitar, and were sold by stores such as Sears and Montgomery Wards. This fun, fact-filled book is an outstanding roundup of these wonderful instruments, starting with the Gene Autry model of 1932, through guitars made to capitalize on the popularity of the Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers, up through present-day makers. Includes hundreds of fantastic photos, a 32-page color section, and biographies of the artists behind the guitars, plus a chapter on leading custom guitar maker Greg Rich, showcasing some of the western guitars he has built. A must for every guitar collector Steve Evans is the world’s foremost authority on and leading collector of cowboy guitars. He owns a music store in Jacksonville, AR. A resident of Anaheim, CA, the affable Ron Middlebrook is the founder and owner of Centerstream Publishing. He is an avid instrument collector and husky musher. |

Seven Guitars $8.59 It is the spring of 1948. In the still cool evenings of Pittsburgh’s Hill district familiar sounds fill the air. A rooster crows. Screen doors slam. The laughter of friends gathered for a backyard card game rises just above the wail of a mother who has lost her son. And there’s the sound of the blues played and sung by young men and women with little more than a guitar in their hands and a dream in their hearts. August Wilson’s Seven Guitars is the sixth chapter in his continuing theatrical saga that explores the hope heartbreak and heritage of the African-American experience in the twentieth century. The story follows a small group of friends who gather following the untimely death of Floyd "Schoolboy" Barton a local blues guitarist on the edge of stardom. Together they reminisce about his short life and discover the unspoken passions and undying spirit that live within each of them.It is the spring of 1948. Star Guitars: 101 Guitars That Rocked the World $30.31 These are the guitars so famous that their names are often household words: B. B. King’s Lucille, Eric Clapton’s Blackie, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s First Wife, Billy F Gibbons’ Pearly Gates, Neil Young’s Old Black, and many more. Here’s the first-ever illustrated history of the actual guitars of the stars that made the music. Other best-selling guitar histories look at the rank-and-file models, but this book is unique in profiling the actual "star guitars"–the million-dollar babies, such as the 1968 Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix burned at Woodstock, which sold at Sotheby’s auction house in 1993 for $1,300,000. Amateurs buy guitars to emulate the stars–Clapton’s Strat, Slash’s Les Paul–and this book explains the stars’ modifications, thus showing how others can recreate those famous tones. |

Barnstorm $14.98 Barnstorm, Joe Walsh’s first solo album after leaving the James Gang, garnered him fame not only as a guitarist but also as a songwriter. While it’s true that Walsh established himself as a late-’60s/early-’70s guitar hero on the Gang’s more boogie-oriented rock numbers, it’s Walsh’s love of lushly textured production and spacy, open-ended songs featuring both acoustic and electric guitars that is showcased here on this wildly adventurous and forgotten unqualified masterpiece. Recorded at the Caribou Ranch in Nederland, CO, Barnstorm reflects the big sky and wide open spaces. Accompanied by bassist Kenny Passarelli and drummer Joe Vitale, Walsh freely indulges himself with fat guitars and keyboards, beautiful choruses, country tinges, and pastoral pop hooks, as evidenced by the glorious opener, “Here We Go.” This segues, via the sound of a spooky lonesome wind, into the hauntingly beautiful psychedelic country tune “Midnight Visitor,” with elegantly woven acoustic guitars, fat carnival organ sounds, and — of course — the sound of the wind before it slips out the back door. And so it goes with the nearly Baroque psychedelic suite of “One and One,” which slides seamlessly into “Giant Bohemoth” (sic) and the rollicking “Mother Says.” Everywhere on the album’s front half, reverie and American mythological archetypes and history weave together, displacing the listener from the here and now. The openly pastoral country-tinged rock of the album’s second half signifies Walsh’s considerable gifts as a songwriter who uses his guitar as a dreamy, mercurial narrative device, as signified by the masterpiece “Birdcall Morning” — one of the greatest rock & roll love songs of the early ’70s. It is actually mirrored by the sadness and organic bluesy quality of “Home” and the unabashed pop/rock romanticism of “I’ll Tell the World,” complete with glorious four-part backing harmonies and a crunching guitar crescendo. Speaking of crunch, Barnstorm was also the firs… |

Battle of the Bands $12.99 Released in an era of rhythm-game renaissance, Battle of the Bands for Nintendo’s Wii might be considered THQ’s answer to Activision’s Guitar Hero and EA’s Rock Band games for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For a winning performance, the player attempts to hit the right notes as they scroll towards the front of the screen in familiar fashion, but Battle of the Bands does not make use of additional music instrument accessories, instead calling on players to make the right gestures at the right time with the Wii Remote. Both single- and multiplayer modes are available in the game, but in either case, there is head-to-head competition between rival bands. Players choose to take the role of one of 11 fictional bands in the repressed city of New Cadenza, where master musician (and the game’s top enemy boss character) Mr. Hong rules with his Violent Orchestra. Each playable band favors a different musical style, and in the heat of competition, players can change the playback of current song to match their band’s style. As players compete by gesturing to the beat, scenes of musical instrument combat, with bullet-spewing violins and flamethrower guitars, play out in the background. Musical styles featured in the game include rock, Latin, country, and hip-hop. The 30 available tracks run the gamut from “Brick House” by the Commodores and Cypress Hill’s “Insane in the Brain” to the Soggy Bottom Boys’ “Man of Constant Sorrow” and “Photograph” by Def Leppard, and each song can be played in any of the musical styles, depending on the preferred style of the band that is ahead in the current competition. ~ T.J. Damaged Goods $13.98 In Brad Chesivoir’s cover photograph for Nils Lofgren’s tenth solo studio album, Damaged Goods, Lofgren appears asleep, surrounded by guitars, and elsewhere in the packaging, Lisa Pampillonia’s design focuses on extreme close-up shots of guitars in heightened colors. These are good indications of the album’s contents. Lofgren remains, in essence, a guitar hero, and on the album’s 12 tracks, he seems to have spent more time working on the riffs and textures he could get out of his guitars than on anything else. He is accompanied by drummer Andy Newmark and bassist Roger Greenawalt (who also produced, engineered, and mixed the record), with some string and choral parts added here and there, and Branford Marsalis sitting in on saxophone on a couple of tracks. The songs all have lyrics and vocals, but those seem to have come after the fact, as addenda to complete tracks built out of Lofgren’s guitar playing. Sometimes he sings of love gone wrong, other times he sings in the identities of characters. (“Only Five Minutes” is about an ex-con who falls off the wagon and goes back to jail on New Year’s Eve; “Trip to Mars” details the complaints of a veteran police officer.) Occasionally, he seems to be singing from the heart, or at least the head, as in the philosophical “Life” (co-written with Lou Reed). But it’s still the guitar work that matters. “Heavy Hats” concerns a man’s taking on responsibility as his child is about to be born, and “Nothin’s Fallin’” sounds like a sincere account of an adult son dealing with an aging father’s illness. But even on these songs, the guitar parts tend to overwhelm the tracks. As such, it’s no wonder than Lofgren remains best known as a hired gun for artists capable of writing more substantial songs, and that, at this juncture in his career, he is recording for a small independent label in Georgetown, CT. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi |

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith $19.99 One of Activision’s most successful franchises joins forces with one of rock’s most enduring bands in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. The series, known for making gamers feel like rock stars, first put real rock stars into games with the inclusion of guitar gods Slash and Tom Morello as boss characters in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, but Guitar Hero: Aerosmith lets players follow the legendary Boston-based quintet’s ascension from the tiny Nipmuc High School auditorium to center stage at the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show. More of a healthy, Aerosmith-themed expansion of Guitar Hero III than a completely new entry in the series, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith nevertheless offers more than 40 new rock songs to which gamers can shred. The track list is heavy with Aerosmith classics like “Dream On,” “Sweet Emotion,” and “Rag Doll,” but the game also features songs from groups that have influenced or toured with the band, including Mott the Hoople, New York Dolls, and The Black Crowes. Gamers can begin as familiar characters from Guitar Hero III like Axel Steel and Midori, but eventually they’ll be able to jam as guitarists Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton. New outfits become available as players progress through the six venues, and for the first time in the series, all five members of the group will be on stage at once. Lead singer Steven Tyler spent a month shooting motion capture video, while Perry, Hamilton, and Brad Whitford shred on dozens of real guitars from their personal collection, all of which can be unlocked. Though Guitar Hero: Aerosmith features standard issue rhythm-based gameplay, the single-player difficulty level has attenuated, and gamers are only confronted by one boss battle. Co-op career mode has been removed, but gamers can still go head-to-head or unlock songs cooperatively in the regular career mode. The online modes from Guitar Hero III remain the same, but downloadable songs are not supported. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide |

Not A Word On It $13.98 Guitarist Pete Carr is primarily known as a member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. His r? sum? also includes being a member of Duane and Gregg Allman’s Hourglass, and for declining an invitation to join the Allman Brothers Band — they asked Dickey Betts later. Carr has played on dozens, if not hundreds, of recordings by everyone from Rod Stewart and Bob Seger to Bobby Womack, Wilson Pickett, and Willie Nelson, to mention a few. He also had two solo recordings: the first, Not a Word on It, was issued in 1975 on the independent Big Tree and was later licensed by Atlantic. Recorded at Wishbone Studio in Muscle Shoals, Carr acted as songwriter, lead guitarist, arranger, and producer. He employed the use of bassist Lenny LeBlanc, drummer Roger Clark, percussionist Tom Roady, and Harvey Thompson on saxophone. There are a slew of keyboard players here, including Chuck Leavell (the inner sleeve of the booklet credits him, the back cover does not), Clayton Ivey, and Tim Henson. Musically this is funky, jazz-inflected rock. Carr? s playing shines as much for its restraint as it does his tight, imaginative phrasing. Check the nocturnal blues of the opener ? Transcumbian Lover,? that feels like a cross between Roy Buchanan and Peter Green’s more refined moments. Carr’s tone is biting, but every note he plays is perfectly emotive and musically sumptuous. The funky ? Foxfire,? features organ, piano, and synth all tripling with his guitars. ? On Lucifer? s Knee? uses a funked-up bassline and a Rhodes to create a backdrop for some mean guitar playing that moves inside and through the rhythm. ? Broken Stone? is a straight-up Southern rock & roll boogie that moves. ? Twisted Hair? is an anthemic closing statement with dual leads, acoustic piano, and shifting time signatures in a rock & roll guitar hero setting. Carr? s work is pretty much for guitar-o-philes and production heads, but the music is solidly played and the album is enjoyable throughout. ~ Thom… |

Shredmaster PlayStation 2 Wireless Guitar for Guitar Hero & Rock Band $42.32 Works with both Guitar Hero and Rock Band! Guitar Hero is one of the most popular games in gaming history, and its growing every day. The most common complaint with all of the current guitars on the market is that they are very hard for younger children to play. Smaller children have smaller hands and the button layout on the current guitars is difficult for them to play. Our guitar solves this problem by adding a secondary set of buttons that are smaller so kids can play the game much more easily. |

The Bridge $9.99 Riding high on the blockbuster An Innocent Man and with a new jet-setting bride at his side, Billy Joel took full advantage of the high life, as is clear from The Bridge, an album that unwittingly celebrates the excesses of the Reagan years. While he hasn’t quite settled into middle age, Joel is ready to take advantage of his wealth and status, recruiting a hero (Ray Charles) and a new wave kid (Cyndi Lauper) for duets, turning to Sting for inspiration (“Running on Ice”), fronting a big band (“Big Man on Mulberry Street”), writing a song for a movie (“Modern Woman”), and picking up the guitar (“A Matter of Trust”), just for the hell of it. You could say that it’s eclectic, but it’s scattershot, because it’s just Joel showing off his musical skills. He’s done this before, to great effect on Turnstiles, but this is all about hubris and, as such, it sounds exactly like its time. From its processed, distorted guitars to its hollow synthesizers, The Bridge sounds dated and it’s his most uneven since Streetlife Serenade. Even on the hits, he sounds as if he’s stretching — “This Is the Time” is labored compared to “Just the Way You Are” (not to mention considerably more vulgar); “A Matter of Trust” never hits upon a solid riff like “Sometimes a Fantasy”; “Modern Woman” is catchy but fluffy; “Baby Grand” is weighed down by Joel’s vocal affectations. In context of the album, they’re fairly enjoyable, but they hint at the dry spell that was just around the corner. Nevertheless, Joel still has enough panache and is riding on so much exuberance that The Bridge remains an entertaining listen, especially if it’s viewed as a Reagan-era artifact. It just doesn’t compare to what came before. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

USED: All Over the Road $4.99 Mars Arizona’s second album is more country and less folky than their debut, Love Songs from the Apocalypse. Produced and arranged by Paul Knowles and Nicole Storto, it’s a blend of originals and covers in a dark alt-country mode. “He Broke Your Heart” is a slow country-rock song marked by Knowles’ exhausted vocal and moaning slide guitar fills. “Goodbye Peace” is a eulogy to a dead friend. Storto’s multi-tracked vocals and the churchy organ give the song a solemn feeling, while the distorted guitar solo portrays the rage one feels at the loss of a friend. “Shadows on the Wall” is another song about death, or maybe suicide, with clanging guitars that mirror the confusion an old man feels as his life slips away. “Pretty Mama, Pretty Girl” is a minimal country tune, the sad tale of a barroom gal alone with her empty life. Storto’s cheerless vocal dances between quiet acoustic guitars and Knowles’ tortured electric guitar, mixed down to accentuate the song’s hopeless vibe. The title tune is an energetic, twang-heavy cosmic honky tonk rocker with screaming slide guitar work by Knowles. Buck Owens’ “Excuse Me (I Think I’ve Got a Heartache)” gets slowed to accent the emotional pain of the lyric. Storto’s vulnerable vocal and Chad Manning’s weeping fiddle make it a tearjerker. “Working Class Hero” blends Manning’s spooky fiddle and Knowles’ desolate vocal, while Gillian Welch’s “Elvis Presley Blues” goes to church with a sanctified instrumental coda from Larry Steelman’s Hammond B-3. ~ j. poet, Rovi |

USED: Appeal to Reason $9.99 If ever there was a year to release a political punk album it was 2008, when the U.S. was consumed by the wildest presidential campaign in modern history. It seems like the perfect backdrop for Rise Against to release Appeal to Reason, their third major-label record, and in a way it is — certainly, the group rages against the moral decay rotting the core of the U.S. on the opening “Collapse (Post-Amerika),” just as they strike out against the slow dumbing down of America on “Re-Education (Of Labor)” and tell Iraqi soldier stories on “Hero of War.” The latter showcases the acoustic guitars that helped goose 2006′s The Sufferer & the Witness into the Billboard Top Ten but the rest boast the manic rapid-fire hardcore delivery that hearkens back to Rise Against’s politically minded forefathers Bad Religion. This balance of plaintive modern folk and carefully traditional protest punk is offset by Rise Against’s increasingly strong fondness for heavy, slick production, the kind where the rhythms are too tight and the guitars overdriven and clean, the kind where it sounds more like ’80s metal than ’80s punk. Rise Against is hardly the only modern punk band to be weighed down by this contradiction — it’s entirely too devoted on chops and gear, Guitar Center punk — but it stings a little more with them as their ambitions, smarts, and skills are higher than their peers. They seem like they shouldn’t have such a beefy, big sound, particularly as it obscures their message, giving the group a weird dichotomy: they are clean, accomplished musicians and sincere, socially conscious rockers but those two halves don’t complement each other well, at least not on the well-intentioned Appeal to Reason. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

USED: Appeal to Reason $9.99 If ever there was a year to release a political punk album it was 2008, when the U.S. was consumed by the wildest presidential campaign in modern history. USED: DIRTY ROTTEN FILTHY STINK $5.99 Other bands were bigger, other bands were better, but no other group embodied the spirit of late-’80s hair metal as much as Warrant. They were slick and tuneful, cheerfully shallow and gussied up to look prettier than they actually are. It was the era in a nutshell — proud to be all surface and no depth. That aesthetic is what drives their debut, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, an album where they shake and shimmy like rock stars because that’s what they desperately want to be. To achieve that, they distilled the sounds of L.A. at the time, where everybody used Van Halen and Kiss as a template, balancing the former’s guitar hero antics and flamboyant sex-god frontman with the latter’s big dumb riffs and pop hooks. Warrant surely weren’t the first to do it — Ratt and Poison brought it into the mainstream a few years earlier — but the glossy package of Dirty Rotten makes it emblematic of its time. It’s sleek and clean, built on processed guitars and cavernous drums, never taking more time than it needs, pushing the hooks front and center, along with a mile-wide sentimental streak best heard on the power ballads “Sometimes She Cries” and “Heaven,” which sold this album to a wider, largely female audience that was also enamored with frontman Jani Lane’s pretty looks. But don’t be mistaken — those are two slow moments on an album that’s a party record, the time when the lights dim and the kids sway in a slow dance. The rest of this is good-time pop-metal, all professionally done but leaving little lasting impression, outside of the tremendous “Down Boys,” which sounds exactly the same as the rest of the record but has an indelible chorus and is the one time when the band actually sounds powerful instead of preening. But it’s hard to criticize an album for not making a lasting impression when it was designed to be in the moment, something to blast at keggers and when cruising through town. It severed its purpose in 1989, and years later, it sounds exactly … |

USED: Death Is This Communion $9.99 Album number four from High on Fire offers a few change-ups right out of the gate. For starters, it marks the debut of the band’s third bassist, Jeff “Zeke” Matz. Secondly, it’s thus far the most varied set in the batch. Matt Pike has always been a very texturally oriented guitarist. His strumming technique filled a lot of the space that can be the death knell of a power trio metal band. He’s been inventive without having to be a guitar hero. (But in this sense, putting the sound of a band before his own ego gratification actually makes him one.) In producer and recording engineer Jack Endino — who worked with both Soundgarden and Nirvana — this crew found a very able and willing collaborator. Endino understands “heavy,” but he also understands dynamics, and he encouraged Pike to explore some new sonic territory as a soloist as well. The slippery elements of strangeness on tracks like “Waste of Tiamat,” where acoustic guitars strung high introduce the tune’s opening bars before that crushing riff drops the hammer and is immediately followed by a brief but furious drum solo. Elsewhere, on the brief instrumental “Khanrad’s Wall,” a tambour and a 12-string acoustic (played by Matz) engage tom-tom heavy drumming, but it’s followed by the speeded up near-Mot? rhead intensity of “Turk.” The guitar solo in the middle, while mixed down just above the riff, is insane; just off the rails. That intense pace is furthered by the brief but well-paced drum orgy on “Headhunter,” which gives way to “Rumors of War” in all its doomy (yet a bit quicker) riff-laden glory. Those who long for the old-school sounds of High on Fire will not be dismayed by this sound since there is plenty of the extreme doom riffing on “Dii” and extreme distortion of both guitars and bass in “Cyclopian Scape,” after the 12-string intro that has its own strange resemblance to something off of Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti. For all the changes and advances, this is still High on Fire…. |

USED: Desire $7.99 The well-known session guitarist made some slow but steady inroads into the smooth jazz realm with two well-received albums, 2001′s With Every Touch and especially Bringin’ It Back, but made an even greater case for genre stardom with this beautifully played, incredibly diverse disc that features a generous 15 tracks and 70 minutes of non-stop, surprise-filled electric and acoustic action. While fitting right in among better-established genre artists like Norman Brown, Blake Aaron pays tribute to everyone from Wes Montgomery (the bright, breezy, radio-ready “Bumpin’ on the Wes Side”) to Thelonious Monk and Grover Washington, Jr. (the simmering and soulful “Harmonious Funk”). He really hit his stride on the fast and furious, intensely rocking “Baby Likes the Blues,” a scorching track that would give Jeff Golub a run for his smooth jazz-meets-blues money. It’s a bit ironic that Aaron named the first track after his obvious guitar hero, because as tasty and catchy as it is, he didn’t start truly bumpin’ till the more intensely funky “Come on Over,” which pitted his crackling electric with co-producer Paul Brown’s bright rhythm guitars. Brown also contributed his Midas-behind-the-boards-touch to the slow jam “Shine,” which introduced listeners to Aaron’s gentler acoustic charms and allowed newcomer Jessy J to shimmer on flute. As inventive as Aaron’s playing was throughout, he pretty much stuck to the in-the-pocket stuff on most of the tracks (not that this is a bad thing!). Glorious exceptions to this vibe are the soulful, jazz quartet-flavored “In Her Sweet Way” (on which the listener can feel Aaron’s guitar “crying”), and the feisty samba-lite of “Run Away with You.” By 2007, smooth jazz was glutted with way too many cover songs, but Aaron managed to find inventive ways to express “Fragile” (adding a fun Brazilian twist) and Billy Preston’s funk masterpiece “Will It Go Round in Circles.” Overall, Desire was one of the genre’s best releases of 2… |

USED: Ear-Bleeding Country: The Best of Dinosaur Jr. $6.99 The conventional wisdom on Dinosaur Jr. is focused almost entirely on their sonics, which admittedly were devastating and influential. Other bands had never relinquished the force of electric guitars — H? sker D? were a galvanizing force, Sonic Youth reaffirmed that sheer noise had poetic power — but Dinosaur, through their laconic frontman, J Mascis, restored not just the idea of a guitar hero, but showed that underground rock could soar with the eloquence of a guitar hero, reeling from lovely leads to sheets of noise to tranquil chords. In their early days, they relied more on sheer, overwhelming power, which tended to overshadow Mascis’ subtle songwriting — something that came to the forefront when the group, shed of Lou Barlow, shifted to Sire early in the ’90s, because that also brought cleaner, precise productions. Since Rhino’s 2001 compilation Ear-Bleeding Country: The Best of Dinosaur Jr. concentrates the Sire recordings, it does wind up emphasizing his songwriting, yet since those songs were always graced with Dinosaur’s sonic power and grace, it does provide an accurate summary of their career. And it provides a pretty tremendous listen in doing that. Some may argue that there’s not enough Homestead or SST material here, and “Raisans” should have been here (along with Green Mind’s “Puke + Cry,” and possibly their cover of “Show Me the Way”), but this generous 19-track collection never sags in its momentum, never has a dull spot, and pulls off a tricky move — it makes Mascis seem consistent, which latter-day Dinosaur Jr. were not necessarily. However, as this collection proves, Mascis never lost his touch and could still write terrific songs, even as late as the group’s final album. But what really stands out here is the consistency of the work — “Little Fury Things” and “Freak Scene” may be the benchmarks of underground ’80s rock, but alt-rock standards like the straight cover of the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” “Whatever’s Cool With M… |

USED: I Feel Cream $9.99 Subtle” isn’t usually a word associated with Peaches’ music, but it applies to I Feel Cream surprisingly often. Yes, even though she proclaims someone a “mangina” in one song and herself a “stage whore” in another, this set of songs is often more restrained, and even mature, than Peaches has been in the past — and not just because she tells a lover to lick her crow’s feet on “Trick or Treat.” I Feel Cream is far more electronic and dancefloor-oriented than her music has been in years; in sharp contrast to Impeach My Bush’s electro-glam rock, this album has absolutely no guitars. It also features more collaborations with other producers than Peaches’ previous work. Along with Gonzales, with whom she’s worked since the Teaches of Peaches days, she enlists Digitalism, Soulwax, Drums of Death, and her former remixers Simian Mobile Disco to help take her music in different directions. Some of these don’t quite work — “Lose You,” an icy, fragile ballad, is pretty but doesn’t quite work as a way to show Peaches’ vulnerable side, and “Mud”‘s chilly sound is similarly at odds with her fiery persona — but most of them do. “Talk to Me” is a standout, with Soulwax providing an electro-soul backdrop for some of Peaches’ most powerful singing. It’s raw, it’s direct, and it’s nearly as big a step forward as the album’s title track: “I Feel Cream” takes the breathy appeal of Impeach My Bush’s “Downtown” and turns it into gauzily erotic disco about love/lust at first sight in the club that feels like the heiress to “More, More, More” and “I Feel Love”‘s abstract-yet-explicit come-ons. Only her rap, which rhymes “guitar hero” with “DeNiro” and “Robert Shapiro,” makes it obvious that this is a Peaches song. There are also plenty of moments that aren’t groundbreaking, but still show that Merill Nisker has a lot to say about sex, music, and pop culture nearly a decade after Teaches of Peaches was released. “Billionaire” is classic, tough-talking Peac… |

USED: Las Consecuencias $7.98 Enrique Bunbury follows his American roots rock-inspired Hellville De Luxe with yet another U-turn to a winding career in the reflective Las Consecuencias. For this largely acoustic affair, Bunbury leaves his rock & roll hero persona at the door but retains its inner turmoil, which only heightens the typically somber nature of his lyrics. Bunbury is never one to shy away from wearing his influences on his sleeve, and Las Consecuencias offers him an opportunity to try his hand at the “written during many a sleepless night album” genre. Indeed, the familiar shadows of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Neil Young, and, as always, Bob Dylan are never far away. While the subdued setting clearly places the entire weight of the album on Bunbury’s texts and voice, the good news is that he rises to the challenge with one of his stronger batches of songs in years. These ten new compositions are smoldering, slow-burning narratives, featuring mature — and often decidedly beautiful — lyrics and impassioned vocal performances, matched by a stately tapestry of acoustic guitars, piano, and violin. True, there is a general sameness to many of these songs (similar in turn to many previous Bunbury ballads), so that the ones that immediately stand out are those that deviate from the norm, such as the unexpected cover of Jeanette’s “Frente a Frente,” sung together with Miren Iza, and “Los Habitantes,” with fierce electric guitar work by Jordi Mena. However, the emotional impact of tracks such as “Las Consecuencias,” “Ella Me Dijo Que No,” and “El Boxeador,” to name but the first three, may prove even more rewarding to the attentive listener. Las Consecuencias might be not be Enrique Bunbury’s most creative or adventurous effort, but this fine album shows the perennially wandering bohemian from Zaragoza at his most intimate and heartfelt, truly at the peak of his songwriting powers. ~ Mariano Prunes, Rovi |

USED: MISTAKES 407 $2.99 The scene proliferates with bands gleefully setting out to destroy all vestiges of genre distinctions. It’s all just music, they declare with delight, and prove it with every CD they record. A Hero from a Thousand Paces are the latest addition to this club of vandals, arising phoenix-like from the ashes of the Pennyroyals, and ribbons of their punk past are evident within. But Hero are no punk band, punk is merely just one of the dozen or so styles that they garb their sound in, the predominate one being pop. Metal, hard rock, classic rock, prog rock, emo, punk rock, post-punk, a flicker of singer/songwriter, a sprinkling of glam, a touch of classical, well, you get the idea. Basically, the last 35 years of rock and pop can be found somewhere within Mistakes, all the while never actually evoking a single actual band from any of those genres. “Aftermath,” for instance folds a hard rock riff around punk guitar attacks, tosses an effervescent keyboard run overhead, and throws a pop vocal on top. There’s sparkling piano work on “Semantics” and “It’s Not Over,” a lush and languorous atmosphere swirls around the verses of “She’ll Pay for Me in Singles,” a perfect pop chorus sits pretty on the “Bold and the Beautiful,” and the catchiest of melodies is heard on “Close Your Eyes.” The band’s own emphasis is tri-fold: melodies, all of which soar across this set like eagles; powerful, emotive vocals; and dual guitars, which duel across genres, fence with each other, intertwine, and leap into stunning solos, while the rhythm section shift tempos, hold the piece and place, and create their own dynamics. This is pop far removed from its simplistic predecessors, infectious but without the kind of huge hooks that once defined the genre. It’s far more subtle, way more intricate, and over time much more satisfying. Pop used to mean easily disposable once you finally got the tune out of your head, but these numbers are determined to stick around much longer, their fulln… |

USED: OUT OF THE BLUE 1001 $2.99 Wyle is an indie singer/songwriter and guitarist whose edgy rock style fits him cozily into the mainstream of today’s alternative pop/rockers, nothing beyond the norm but eminently listenable despite some lyrical oddities. The opening track, “Lose Yourself,” is typical of his style — intense blistering and throbbing guitar blended with sparse vocal passages and on into a catchy hook. He enjoys a mix of acoustic and electric guitars, often on the same track; on “Cindy,” he begins with a simple guitar strain and vocal before the song evolves into a harder rocker. While his themes are generally the typically romantic, he’s also capable of stinging commentary on “Such a Loser,” whose point is driven home with increasingly emphatic drum fills and fiery guitar lines. Wyle shows a nice facility for vocal harmonies and trip-hoppy percussion on “She Knows the Way,” and even delves into mystical ideas in the intro to “Hollywood Hero,” another quirky social commentary. He’s best in the mid-tempo ranges with more subtle guitar drama. On “Slide,” the intensity of the strings and the production effects detract from the vocals. Wyle is someone to keep your eyes on. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide |

USED: Power Chords, Vol. 3 $6.98 With this third and final volume in the set, we now move into modern-day MTV territory, with a few stragglers thrown in to add ballast to the collection. Everything compiled here was recorded in the 1980s, and although several of the tracks were recorded early in the decade (Donnie Iris’ “Ah! Leah!,” Aldo Nova’s “Fantasy,” the Rossington-Collins Band’s “Don’t Misunderstand Me,” Foreigner’s “Juke Box Hero” and Blackfoot’s “Fly Away” all emanate from 1980-81), the dominant tone of the collection spotlights the hair-band explosion that went hand in hand with the rise of the cable video network MTV. Artists and groups familiar to early Headbanger’s Ball viewers (Whitesnake, Tesla, Sammy Hagar, and Dio) all weigh in with signature selections loaded with thundering drums, tons of signal processing on the guitars and vocals, and guitar riffing that literally screams of mid-’80s metal excess, spandex, hair mousse and all. There’s a fair amount of hits aboard and this makes an admirable entry into the series. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi |

USED: So, Who’s Paranoid? $9.99 Seven years after Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible buried the hatchet and begin recording together again as the Damned with the album Grave Disorder, the Occasionally Dynamic Duo has returned with 2008′s So, Who’s Paranoid?, and how likely you are to enjoy this album has a lot to do with your perspective on this band’s history. If you loved the Damned when they were “hell-for-leather destruction merchants” (as Sensible once put it) on albums like Damned Damned Damned or Machine Gun Etiquette, you’re going to be disappointed; there is practically nothing on So, Who’s Paranoid? that resembles punk rock as we know it, and instead of short, thrashy rock tunes powered by dirty sounding guitars and a speed-addled lunatic on drums, this is a slick and carefully crafted disc complete with keyboards, big guitar solos, and even the occasional appearance of strings and a choir. Then again, if latter-day Damned sets like Strawberries and Phantasmagoria were more to your liking, So, Who’s Paranoid? will probably be your cup of tea; while the goth-influenced approach of those LPs has been muted, this is better-than-average pop-conscious Damned, with Vanian’s vocals in fine shape and recent additions Monty Oxymoron (keyboards), Stuart West (bass), and Pinch (drums) sounding tight and confident. But regardless which era of the Damned is your favorite, it’s hard to get past the fact that most of the songs on So, Who’s Paranoid? aren’t up to the standards of this band’s original run (unless you count the stuff on the disastrous Anything), and someone should have had the good sense to tell Captain Sensible that he isn’t a guitar hero, and that the 14-minute pseudo-psychedelic number that closes out the set, “Dark Asteroid,” is a serious mistake. In short: if you dig “New Rose” this won’t move you, if “Grimly Fiendish” is your fave Damned tune you might find this entertaining, and either way you’re a lot more likely to pull out your old Damned albums than spin So, Who’s Para… |

USED: Spent Bullets $9.98 On his second album under his own name, 2009′s Spent Bullets, Adam Franklin has all but forsaken any traces of electronic experimentation left over from his Toshack Highway project. He’s also left behind the hard-charging sound of Swervedriver, which was starting to creep back into his playbook on Bolts of Melody. Instead, Franklin focuses on the kind of low-key, soft-focus guitar balladry that provided many of the highlights on Bolts. It’s possible that since the album was being recorded at the same time Swervedriver were re-forming and touring, any itch Franklin had to make noise was being thoroughly scratched elsewhere. Apart from the misleadingly spry album opener, “Surge,” he and his small group make almost no concessions to rocking out on Spent Bullets, with few tempos that inch above a languid crawl, guitars that wind around each other in hazy coils of effects, and vocals that aren’t showy or dripping with emotion conveying a fragile tenderness. A lot of talk has always focused around the guitars of Swervedriver, but the secret weapon was always Franklin’s laid-back vocal style. He’s only gotten better over time, and given a lovely melody like that of the cowboy lament “Teardrops Keep Fallin’ Out My Head” or “Autumn Leaf,” he can make your heart do funny things. The vocal harmonies on Spent Bullets are something special, too, especially on the stunning “Big Sur,” which sounds like a lost America classic (if America were guitar heroes as well as harmony wizards). Fans of guitar interplay won’t feel slighted by all the great vocals. Franklin and fellow guitarist Locksley Taylor don’t do any shredding or lay down any riffs that will turn up on Guitar Hero anytime soon, but they do deliver plenty of restrained beauty, and Franklin still excels at creating fluid guitar lines that lift your spirits. Check the elegiac “Champs” for a nice example of their subtle glory, or the truly melancholy-sounding lead lines on “Bolts of Melody” for their near-perf… |

USED: THE BEST OF $6.99 Barnstorm, Joe Walsh’s first solo album after leaving the James Gang, garnered him fame not only as a guitarist but also as a songwriter.

USED: The Bridge $3.99 Riding high on the blockbuster An Innocent Man and with a new jet-setting bride at his side, Billy Joel took full advantage of the high life, as is clear from The Bridge, an album that unwittingly celebrates the excesses of the Reagan years.
